Burpee Broad Jump Alternatives

BBJ alternatives can train selected parts of the Burpee Broad Jump, but no reviewed exercise is a validated complete substitute for the race movement.

What the race requires

In HYROX® Singles 2026/27, Burpee Broad Jumps are station four and cover 80 m. Each section starts with both hands behind the line and the chest on the floor. On subsequent burpees, the hands may be placed no more than 30 cm in front of the toes. Both feet take off and land simultaneously, with at most 5 cm of fore-aft offset; steps between repetitions are not allowed. The station follows run four; the rules do not specify a typical repetition count, ceiling height, floor softness or physiological classification.

What alternatives can and cannot replace

A box-jump burpee, tuck-jump burpee, step-up, standing broad jump, plank-to-jump sequence or machine-plus-jump interval changes at least one of the direction, contact, equipment, range, transition or fatigue conditions. Meta-analyses of plyometric training show that direction can influence transfer to horizontal performance, but they do not test HYROX® BBJ substitutions. These options may practise selected qualities; none is proven to reproduce BBJ performance or race fatigue.

Exercise options

Useful options depend on the constraint. Short-lane BBJ repetitions preserve the actual movement over less distance. Standing broad jumps retain horizontal jumping but omit the burpee. Box or tuck jumps emphasize vertical jumping. Burpee-to-box-jump combinations retain a floor-to-jump transition but change direction and landing. Step-ups and machine intervals are different conditioning tasks. Their suitability depends on skill, space, equipment, symptoms and the session goal; no reviewed evidence ranks one as the closest or most effective substitute.

Programming

Choose volume, intensity, rest and frequency from the athlete’s experience, jump exposure, total programme and recovery. The reviewed sources do not validate the article’s prescribed box heights, repetitions, work-rest ratios, 400 m pre-fatigue run, 4–12-week phases, two-to-three weekly sessions or mandatory day between sessions. Progress actual BBJ practice when suitable space and competent technique are available; alternatives do not certify race readiness.

What Repz Data Shows About BBJ Performance Gaps

Across recent seasons of Repz race data, the Burpee Broad Jump is consistently one of the stations with the largest variance between similar-fitness athletes.

Two athletes with near-identical SkiErg and sled times can split 30–45 seconds apart on the BBJ station alone. The differentiating factor is rarely raw fitness: it is specific preparation for the movement pattern and the ability to maintain output under accumulated fatigue.

Athletes who trained BBJ-specific work (including alternatives) in the 12 weeks before their race show materially better station cadence consistency (lower decay from the first half to the second half) compared to athletes who prepared with general conditioning only.

The implication is straightforward: even imperfect BBJ training is significantly better than none. Box jump burpees in a 3-meter gym ceiling replicate enough of the stimulus to produce real adaptation. Cardio machine intervals with jump finishers build the exact fatigue-resistance quality that prevents mid-station blowups.

What does not work is treating the BBJ as a station you will figure out on race day because you could not practice it. The movement pattern and the aerobic-explosive combination require repeated exposure to train effectively.

For a full breakdown of how BBJ fits into the broader race structure and how it compounds with the stations before and after it, the HYROX® workout guide covers station sequencing and cumulative fatigue in detail.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can alternatives completely replace Burpee Broad Jump practice?

No reviewed study establishes a complete substitute. Alternatives may train selected components, while actual BBJ practice retains the full race movement when it can be performed appropriately.

How much space do I need?

The rulebook specifies an 80 m station, not a minimum training area. A shorter clear lane can be used for repeated practice, provided the setup and traffic allow safe execution.

Do these options apply to Doubles?

Doubles teams complete the same 80 m station and may share repetitions under the current changeover rules. The rules do not assign exactly 40 m to each partner or prescribe alternative-training volume.

How often should I train BBJ alternatives?

No universal frequency is established. Decide from training history, jump exposure, total load, goal and recovery rather than a fixed weekly rule.

Is a 20–25 m lane useful?

It permits actual movement practice over shorter bouts, but evidence does not prove a specific set-and-rest formula or equivalence to an uninterrupted race station.
