BBJ Pacing Strategy for Hyrox
Burpee Broad Jump pacing is individual effort distribution across a valid 80 m station; no universal cadence or split table is established.

Race context
In HYROX® Singles 2026/27, Burpee Broad Jumps are station four, after the fourth 1 km run and before run five and the 1,000 m Row. The station covers 80 m under explicit movement standards. The rulebook prescribes neither cadence, split, heart rate, exertion rating, jump length nor target time. The Sled Pull occurs earlier at station three, separated from BBJ by the fourth run; it is not immediately followed by BBJ.

What pacing evidence can say
Pacing is the distribution of effort through a task. Reviews of self-paced endurance exercise describe ongoing regulation in response to fatigue and perception, while a video study of different CrossFit Open workouts linked pacing measures to performance in task-dependent ways. Neither source studied HYROX® BBJ. They support testing a sustainable individual approach, not a universal “first 40 m versus second 40 m” percentage, cadence band or guaranteed negative split.

A practical method
A practical option is to start at a deliberately repeatable rhythm, monitor whether valid movement and jump distance remain controlled, and adjust only from prior practice and current condition. An athlete may use distance markers, elapsed time, repetition count or perceived effort as feedback, but none is mandatory. Maximal early effort, fixed breathing patterns and rigid numerical cues are not established race rules or validated BBJ prescriptions.

Training and measurement
Practise the official movement over measurable short or full distances when space and technique permit. Record context such as preceding work, surface, distance, valid repetitions, rests and total time so sessions can be compared honestly. General CrossFit and endurance studies cannot convert those observations into official HYROX® target tables. Choose volume, rest and frequency within the wider programme; the reviewed evidence does not validate the original three protocols or 8–12-week schedule.

Frequently Asked Questions
What cadence should I start with?
No universal cadence is established. Use a repeatable rhythm tested under comparable conditions while maintaining valid repetitions.

Should I prioritize jump distance or cadence?
Both affect completion, but no study identifies one universal optimum for HYROX®. Judge the combination by valid repeatability and total station performance.

Should I count repetitions?
Counting is optional feedback. The race result is based on completing 80 m validly, not a prescribed number of repetitions.

Why can race performance differ from isolated practice?
The race includes prior running and stations, course conditions and judging. Isolated practice removes much of that context, so the times are not directly equivalent.

Does race experience guarantee better pacing?
No. A systematic review suggests repeated task exposure can improve pacing behaviour generally, but it does not quantify HYROX® BBJ improvement or guarantee an outcome.
