BBJ Race Tips: Conserve Energy

Race-day Burpee Broad Jump guidance should begin with the current movement rules and use individualized pacing rather than unsupported time-saving guarantees.

Race order and rules

HYROX® Singles 2026/27 places the 80 m Burpee Broad Jump at station four. It follows the fourth 1 km run. After BBJ, athletes complete run five before the 1,000 m Row at station five. Each BBJ must meet the hand-placement, chest-to-floor, two-foot take-off and landing requirements; steps between repetitions are prohibited and the final jump must cross the line completely. The rules do not identify this station as where races are decided.

Managing effort

A race-management option is to begin at a rhythm already shown to be repeatable in relevant practice, then adjust to movement validity and current effort. General endurance reviews describe pacing as ongoing regulation, and studies of different CrossFit tasks find task-dependent associations between pacing and performance. They do not validate a HYROX®-specific first-10-metre plan, breathing cycle, 40/40 split, fixed cadence decay, planned-rest rule or guaranteed time saving.

What comes after BBJ

The next event after BBJ is the fifth 1 km run, then the Row. The reviewed evidence does not establish that one BBJ strategy causes a particular rowing split, heart-rate recovery window or 60–90-second gain. Treat the run as part of the actual sequence when rehearsing transitions. Any relationship observed in personal data should be labelled as that athlete’s observation unless a suitable study supports broader inference.

A rule-based checklist

Before racing, know the current movement standard and the venue briefing, identify the start and finish lines, and use footwear and a pace already tested appropriately. During the station, prioritize valid repetitions and respond to the judge. Distance markers, repetition count, breathing cues and perceived effort can be optional feedback. No official source mandates a negative split, zero rest, three reset breaths or a particular opening intensity.

FAQ

Should cadence stay identical for all 80 m?

No official cadence pattern is prescribed. A controlled change may occur with fatigue; use prior practice and valid execution rather than an unverified percentage threshold.

Does strategy change by division?

The fundamental BBJ movement standard is the same across Singles divisions. The rulebook does not prescribe different pacing physiology or technique by Open, Pro or Elite status.

Is a planned standing rest always slower?

No universal comparison is established. A pause adds elapsed time, but whether it improves subsequent movement depends on the athlete and situation.

Does better BBJ technique guarantee energy savings?

Valid, repeatable technique is necessary for the station, but the reviewed sources do not quantify energy saved or guarantee faster later stations.
