Farmers Carry Handles: Buying Guide
Complete farmers carry handles buying guide for HYROX training. Compare materials, grip coatings, weights, and competition standards to find the best handles.

What HYROX® actually uses
The current Singles station is officially the Kettlebell Farmers Carry, not a dedicated-handle carry. Racers cover 200 m with two kettlebells: Women use 2 × 16 kg, Women Pro and Men use 2 × 24 kg, and Men Pro use 2 × 32 kg. Both arms stay extended by the sides while moving. Racers may put the kettlebells down to rest if they do not move them forward during placement, and must finish by returning them upright to the correct box. The course may use multiple laps; the rulebook does not prescribe a 100 m out-and-back layout.

What dedicated carry handles are
A dedicated farmer’s-walk handle is a separate training implement, commonly fixed-weight or plate-loaded. It can train loaded walking, but it does not reproduce the race implement because HYROX® currently uses kettlebells. The official rulebook gives kettlebell mass and movement rules; it does not publish the claimed 28–32 mm handle diameter, knurl, shaft length, plate sleeve, collar or licensed-handle specification. No reviewed study shows that a commercial “competition-spec handle” saves a stated number of seconds in HYROX®.

How to choose a training implement
First decide whether the goal is race familiarity or general loaded-carry training. For race familiarity, a pair of kettlebells at the division load is the closer implement. For an adjustable general-training option, check the manufacturer’s per-handle load rating, plate-sleeve diameter, usable loading length, included mass and compatible retention system. For fixed implements, verify actual mass and grip comfort. Price alone does not establish steel grade, rigidity, weight tolerance or durability; compare documented specifications, warranty and return terms.

Grip diameter and surface
Handle dimensions affect hand mechanics, but there is no universally optimal 28–30 mm carry grip. Ergonomic experiments show that grip force and contact depend on diameter relative to hand size. One study tested cylinders from 38 to 83 mm; another found average maximal grip force rose from 25.4 to 38.1 mm and then declined at larger diameters. Those maximal laboratory grips are not 200 m carries, so they cannot validate the article’s thin/fat-handle cut-offs. Knurl and coatings change feel and friction, but no reviewed HYROX® trial establishes one pattern as best. Choose a surface you can hold without skin injury and that the manufacturer permits you to maintain or chalk.

Training use and transfer
Loaded carries involve locomotion as well as holding. A small acute EMG study found greater measured trunk-muscle activation during farmer carries than matched static holds, but it did not test long-term adaptation or HYROX® performance. A systematic review found only eleven eligible strongman-biomechanics studies and described preliminary farmer-walk kinematics. General resistance evidence supports task specificity, so kettlebell practice is more specific to the current station than dedicated handles; other implements can still develop related capacity. No evidence validates the original fixed 8–14-week windows, three weight zones or exact simulation, volume and overload sessions.

Safety and progression
Use a load, distance and number of sets that preserve a controlled pickup, clear path and secure grip. Progress one variable at a time when appropriate. Inspect handles, welds, sleeves, plates and retention hardware before use; follow the rated load and manufacturer instructions. Secure plate-loaded implements so plates cannot migrate, use footwear and a surface suited to loaded walking, and keep the lane clear. Stop for sharp pain, dizziness, loss of control or equipment movement. Training frequency and volume must fit experience, health, other training and recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I buy farmer’s-walk handles specifically for HYROX®?
They are optional general-training equipment. Current HYROX® Singles uses kettlebells, so kettlebells are the more specific choice for race familiarisation.

What load should my first handles support?
Choose from the loads you actually plan to train and the manufacturer’s rated capacity. Include the handle, plates and collars in total load; a universal 50 kg minimum is not established.

Does a thicker handle build more useful grip strength?
It changes hand mechanics and may increase difficulty, but the effect depends on hand size and diameter. No reviewed evidence proves a particular thick grip improves HYROX® carry time.

Can I use dumbbells or dedicated handles instead of kettlebells?
They can train loaded carrying, but their geometry differs from the race kettlebells. Use them as alternatives when appropriate, without claiming identical transfer.

How long should carry handles last?
There is no evidence-based ten-year lifespan or universal collar-replacement interval. Service life depends on design, load, environment, maintenance and damage; inspect equipment and follow the manufacturer.

Best for: Athletes within 8–10 weeks of a race who want maximum transfer from training to competition. Repz data across our athlete cohort shows that athletes who train with competition-spec handles in the final 6 weeks before a race hold their carry splits tighter than athletes using substitute implements, with the grip pattern, diameter, and weight distribution all transferring without re-calibration on race day.[2]
Sources
Repz athlete cohort analysis comparing carry station split times between athletes who trained with competition-spec handles in the 6 weeks before their race versus those who trained exclusively with dumbbells or kettlebells. Athletes training with competition-spec handles showed an average station split improvement of 8–12 seconds compared to performance predictions based on training data, consistent with reduced re-calibration to the competition implement on race day. ↩
