What HRV and RMSSD measure

Heart-rate variability (HRV) describes variation in the time between successive heartbeats after unsuitable beats and artefacts are handled. RMSSD summarises successive differences between normal intervals and is commonly used as a vagally mediated resting-HRV index. It is influenced by respiration, posture, heart rate, measurement length, time of day and other conditions; it is not a direct meter of total “nervous-system recovery” or a simple sympathetic-versus-parasympathetic switch. Higher is not always better, and a lower value does not identify its cause.

How to obtain a comparable reading

Use a validated sensor and analysis method, minimise movement, inspect or filter artefacts appropriately and repeat measurements under comparable conditions. Morning recordings and overnight estimates answer somewhat different questions; neither is universally the only correct protocol. Short recordings can be useful for RMSSD when their method has been validated, while conventional short-term recordings are often five minutes. Breathing, posture, timing and recording length should be documented and kept consistent rather than treated as incidental.

ECG remains the reference for interbeat intervals. Portable ECG/chest sensors and optical wearables can agree usefully at rest, but error varies with metric, posture, model, algorithm and context and generally worsens with movement. A 2025 validation of five specific nocturnal devices involved only 13 healthy adults; its ranking cannot establish that every Garmin, Oura, Polar or WHOOP model has “high” accuracy. Proprietary readiness scores are not interchangeable with raw RMSSD. Follow an individual trend measured with the same method; there is no universal healthy millisecond score, mandatory 14-day baseline or evidence-based 6–8-week reset rule.

Readiness and training decisions

Some controlled endurance studies report benefits from HRV-guided prescriptions, but protocols and results vary and the evidence does not validate a universal daily traffic-light table. Fixed deviations such as +5%, −10% or −20% do not by themselves prove supercompensation, impaired recruitment, injury risk or a need for a particular zone, hard session or rest day. Interpret a trend alongside planned load, recent performance, symptoms, illness, sleep, resting heart rate and subjective recovery. Overtraining syndrome requires prolonged performance impairment and exclusion of other causes; HRV cannot diagnose it alone.

HYROX® relevance

HYROX® combines running and functional stations, but no reviewed evidence validates HYROX®-specific HRV cut-offs, a predictable 3–5-day post-race recovery window or superior race outcomes from a consumer readiness score. A consistent HRV trend may be one input to load management. It does not replace the training plan, sport-specific practice, symptoms, performance data or clinical advice when readings change persistently or the athlete is unwell.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good HRV for an athlete?

There is no universal value. Compare like-for-like measurements with your own distribution and context rather than another athlete or a population cut-off.

Laborde et al. HRV measurement and interpretation recommendations

Is RMSSD a direct readiness score?

No. RMSSD is a time-domain index commonly used to estimate vagally mediated beat-to-beat variation at rest. Readiness is broader and cannot be inferred from RMSSD alone.

Laborde et al. HRV measurement and interpretation recommendations

How long should I measure?

Use the duration validated for the device and method. Five-minute recordings are conventional for short-term HRV; validated shorter RMSSD protocols and aggregated overnight estimates can also be useful when applied consistently.

Can HRV diagnose overtraining?

No. It may contribute to monitoring, but overtraining syndrome requires performance history, symptoms, recovery time and exclusion of other medical or training-related causes.

Should a low reading automatically cancel intensity?

No. Recheck measurement quality and consider the trend, symptoms, planned load and other recovery information. A predetermined adjustment can be part of a tested personal protocol, but one low value is not a diagnosis or universal stop signal.

Data from Repz's division benchmarks consistently shows that athletes who ignore daily readiness signals, training hard regardless of how they are recovering, plateau faster and sustain more overuse injuries than those who modulate intensity based on objective feedback.[^7]
