Strength training has several jobs

Strength work can develop force, power, tissue tolerance and movement skill. It does not guarantee faster stations or prevent injury, and no five exercises are essential for every athlete. The useful selection depends on the athlete’s current limitation, equipment, experience and race division.

Start from the official tasks

Singles combines running with SkiErg, Sled Push, Sled Pull, Burpee Broad Jumps, Row, Farmers Carry, Sandbag Lunges and Wall Balls. Loads and standards vary by division. Gym exercises can prepare components, while actual stations remain the most specific practice. Sled friction especially prevents a simple kilogram-for-kilogram comparison.

Five useful movement categories

Five broad categories are useful: squat or lunge patterns; hip-hinge patterns; horizontal or vertical pushing; pulling; and loaded carries or trunk control. Examples include squats, split squats, deadlift variations, presses, rows and carries. These categories are a checklist, not a ranked prescription. Jumping or throwing may be added when power is an appropriate goal.

Choose exercises by purpose

Use exercises that can be performed with stable technique and progressed with available equipment. A squat may support leg strength without reproducing a sled. Rows train pulling muscles without reproducing rope handling. Carries are more task-specific for grip and walking under load, but handle shape, turns and distance still matter.

Progress load without false precision

Increase one main variable at a time: load, repetitions, sets, range, velocity or task specificity. Race-load exposure should begin when technique and tolerance permit, not automatically in week six. There is no universal strength ratio, repetition range or lift that predicts a station time. Failure training is not required for every set.

Combine strength and endurance

Strength and aerobic training can coexist. Arrange demanding sessions so the quality needed for each is preserved, particularly when explosive strength matters. Total lower-body load includes lifting, running, jumping, sleds and lunges. Recovery and schedule should determine separation rather than a mandatory number of hours.
