RPE Scale for Hyrox: Rate Your Training Intensity
Use the RPE scale to pace your HYROX® race intelligently. Know the right effort level for every station and running lap to avoid blowing up mid-race.

RPE is a subjective scale
Heart-rate zones divide a continuous response into categories. Three-zone and five-zone systems use different boundaries, so “Zone 2” or “Zone 4” is incomplete without naming the model. Individual physiological thresholds do not always align with fixed percentages.

Estimate with caution
Age-based maximum-heart-rate formulas are population estimates, not exact personal maxima. A measured peak from an appropriate test may still be affected by protocol, motivation and device accuracy. Heart-rate reserve also depends on a reliable resting value. Do not present one calculation as precise.

Use more than heart rate
Combine heart rate with perceived effort, talk test, pace or power and session purpose. Heat, dehydration, altitude, stress, caffeine, medication, fatigue and cardiac drift can change heart rate at the same workload. Wrist sensors can lag or lose accuracy during rapid changes and gripping.

Apply zones to training
Easy work should feel manageable under the selected model; threshold and interval work require different controls. Weekly distribution depends on history, total load and goal. No universal 80/20 split, number of zone sessions or percentage table has been validated specifically for every HYROX® athlete.

Race heart rate is descriptive
Heart rate during a race reflects running, stations, heat, excitement and accumulated fatigue. The small simulated HYROX® study describes one sample and cannot establish a universal race zone or target bpm. Use race data retrospectively with pace, splits and symptoms rather than chasing a ceiling.
Safety and reassessment
Reassess settings when fitness, medication, device or conditions change. Stop for chest pain, faintness, unusual severe breathlessness or palpitations with loss of control and seek appropriate care. A zone target should never override symptoms or safe technique.

Frequently asked questions
Which zone model should I use?
Use one model consistently and understand how its boundaries were estimated.

Is 220 minus age my exact maximum?
No. It is a population estimate with substantial individual error.

What zone should I race in?
There is no universal HYROX® zone; effort varies across runs, stations and athletes.

Why does heart rate rise at the same pace?
Heat, dehydration, fatigue and cardiovascular drift can raise it without a pace change.
