6 SkiErg Alternatives for Home and Gym Training
No SkiErg? Compare six alternatives for cardio, pulling strength and technique, with dumbbell and home options, a sample week and practical substitutions.

Choose an alternative by training purpose
| Alternative | Useful for | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Air bike | Timed conditioning intervals | Different movement and pace display |
| Straight-arm cable pulldown | Controlled pulling strength | Does not reproduce continuous skiing |
| Banded pulldown | Home pulling practice | Resistance changes through the movement |
| Rowing machine | Aerobic work and pulling coordination | Seated technique with a leg-driven start |
| Dumbbell Romanian deadlift | Hip-hinge strength | Not an aerobic or overhead-pulling substitute |
| Cable crunch | Trunk-flexion accessory work | Does not replace full-body conditioning |
This is a practical comparison, not a measured transfer score. No exercise reproduces every part of the SkiErg. You can still maintain a useful training week when the machine is unavailable.
1. Air bike: replace a conditioning interval
Match time and perceived effort, rather than metres or machine calories. For a planned set of four roughly two-minute SkiErg efforts, an example replacement is four two-minute bike efforts with the original recovery. Adjust the bike effort so you can repeat all four intervals; do not turn every replacement into a sprint.
2. Straight-arm cable pulldown: practise pulling strength
Use a stable stance, a secure attachment and a load you can control. Start with arms raised and pull towards your thighs without throwing your torso forward. An example accessory block is 2–3 sets of 10–15 controlled repetitions, stopping before technique deteriorates. Rest sufficiently to repeat the movement cleanly.
This belongs in strength work. It should not be counted as a one-for-one replacement for several minutes of SkiErg conditioning.
3. Banded pulldown: a home option
Use an overhead anchor designed for exercise and check both the anchor and the band before loading them. Practise controlled pulls with an appropriate resistance. A starting example is 2–3 sets of 12–20 repetitions.
A band is equipment: this is a minimal-equipment option, not a no-equipment exercise. Avoid improvised anchors and use another option if you cannot secure the band properly.
4. Rower: maintain aerobic work
The rower can fill the conditioning slot using similar interval durations and recoveries. Keep rowing technique appropriate to the rower rather than trying to imitate a standing SkiErg stroke. Equal metres, watts or calories on the two machines do not establish equal effort or performance.
For example, replace a controlled 10-minute ski with 10 minutes of controlled rowing. Choose the rowing pace from your rowing experience and the purpose of the session.
5. Dumbbell Romanian deadlift: develop the hinge
With dumbbells close to your legs, move your hips back through a comfortable range while keeping the movement controlled. An example strength block is 2–3 sets of 8–12 repetitions with recovery between sets.
If you only have dumbbells, pair suitable strength work with a separate walk, run or other available conditioning activity. Do not perform rushed overhead dumbbell swings to imitate a SkiErg cable pull.
6. Cable crunch: optional trunk work
Use a manageable load and a controlled range. For example, add 2 sets of 10–15 repetitions after strength work. This is optional accessory training, not a required SkiErg substitute. It does not replace the pulling or conditioning component.
A sample week without a SkiErg
| Day | Session example |
|---|---|
| Monday | Easy run or brisk walk at conversational effort |
| Wednesday | Rower or bike: 4 × 2 minutes controlled, 2 minutes easy between |
| Friday | Usual strength session; add pulldowns and a controlled hinge if appropriate |
| Weekend | Easy aerobic session or rest, according to recovery |
Fit replacements into your existing HYROX® training plan; avoid adding every alternative as extra workload. Once you regain machine access, practise short SkiErg efforts before extending the duration. There is no universal minimum number of weeks that makes every athlete ready.
FAQ
How can I train with no equipment at all?
Use walking or running for conditioning and unweighted movement practice for coordination. These do not recreate resisted overhead pulling. Add supervised SkiErg practice when access becomes available.
Which alternative is best with dumbbells?
A Romanian deadlift can support hinge strength, but it does not replace SkiErg conditioning. Keep the strength exercise and the aerobic portion of the session separate.
Can I convert 1,000m SkiErg into rowing metres?
There is no universal conversion. Match the intended duration and effort for a training substitution, then track progress separately on each machine.
