7 SkiErg Benefits for Hyrox
Seven practical uses of SkiErg in HYROX preparation: movement practice, pacing and session planning, with clear limits to health and performance claims.

Put the station in context
In HYROX® Singles 26/27, SkiErg is station 1: 1,000 metres after run 1. Run 2 comes before Sled Push. The first run means “zero leg fatigue” is not a condition the rules guarantee. The designated running sections total approximately 8 km; that is distinct from movement through the Roxzone.
Use the following ideas to decide why a session belongs in your plan. They are not seven guaranteed physiological outcomes or evidence that everyone needs the same weekly dose. The SkiErg guide covers the station in more detail.
HYROX® Singles 26/27 · §1 / §7.2 / §8.1
1. Practise the competition movement
Practising the actual machine lets you work with its handles, platform and monitor. Concept2 describes double-poling as a whole-body movement. Follow its demonstration rather than treating the lats as the only source of power.
A fixed six-to-eight-week schedule is not established here as sufficient for every runner or strength athlete. Nor is fatigue at 400 metres a validated diagnosis of an undertrained muscle.

2. Coordinate the trunk and limbs
Concept2’s current start uses bent arms; initiate with the trunk and coordinate the rest of the movement. Its guidance does not prescribe waiting for exactly 45 degrees of hip flexion or quantify a 30–40% force penalty for an arm-led stroke.
Bucher’s study of 16 male skiers found worse ergometer performance after trunk fatigue. It did not test this HYROX® training plan or show that planks cannot contribute to preparation.

3. Choose a different movement from running
The manufacturer describes the technique as low impact. This does not mean that the legs are inactive or that every joint is unloaded. The same technique guidance explicitly involves the lower body.
Do not treat “low impact” as proof that SkiErg prevents injury, never aggravates knee or Achilles symptoms, or permits unlimited extra training. For an existing injury, choose the exercise and dose with the clinician managing it rather than relying on this article as rehabilitation clearance.
4. Organise continuous or interval work
The PM5 supports workouts specified by time or distance and interval formats. Choose the format for the task you want to practise. For example, 4 × 500 m is 2,000 m of work; rest and warm-up are additional. This is an optional format, not a validated optimum.
A heart-rate range of 130–160 bpm does not define the same intensity for everyone. The intensity-prescription review by Jamnick discusses the limitations of fixed percentages and generic anchors. No source cited here establishes that 15–20 minutes of SkiErg produces the same adaptations as an equal-duration run.

5. Practise reading pace
The PM5 distinguishes current pace from average pace. Use both, alongside distance and how the effort feels, when practising an even effort. Pace is time per 500 metres: 2:10 is faster than 2:20.
Compare repeated attempts under recorded conditions rather than promising a fixed race gain. A start 15 seconds per 500 metres faster does not establish a universal four-to-five-minute lactate-clearance time. Remember the run between SkiErg and Sled Push.

6. Learn to interpret the training record
Record work duration, distance, rests and settings so that you know what you completed. The calorie display is an estimate, not a direct measurement of individual energy expenditure: Concept2’s base calculation uses a 79.5 kg reference person and provides a weight-adjustment calculator.
Consequently, do not promise 60–90 kcal for every 1,000 metres, 200–280 kcal in every 20-minute session, or weight loss from the machine alone. Likewise, a session result does not prove muscle growth, a strength increase or that triceps endurance is the limiting factor.

7. Rehearse the opening transition
A run followed by SkiErg is useful as a practical rehearsal of the opening sequence. It is only part of the race. Singles includes another run before Sled Push and six further stations after that.
Choose this practice within the whole week, adjusting or omitting it when appropriate. A Wednesday SkiErg session is not guaranteed to improve Friday’s run or leave the legs fresher than cycling or rowing. The studies cited here do not establish a universal one-to-two-session dose covering every adaptation or prove asymmetrical transfer to skiing. See the training-plan guide for broader planning context.

FAQ
How long should a SkiErg session last?
Choose duration and rest for your current plan and purpose. The sources do not establish one minimum beginner duration or prove that 20 minutes with one technique causes more adaptation than 40 minutes with another.
Concept2 · SkiErg Technique · Jamnick et al. (2020) · abstract
How many calories will I burn?
The monitor estimates calories using a reference body weight; Concept2 offers a weight-adjusted calculation. Distance alone does not determine an individual calorie total or guarantee weight loss.
Is SkiErg automatically suitable during injury rehabilitation?
No. A low-impact description is not individual rehabilitation clearance. The cited sources do not establish safety for every knee, Achilles or bone-stress problem; discuss the choice with your treating clinician.
How often should I use SkiErg?
Choose frequency within your complete running, strength and station preparation. These sources do not establish one weekly dose that covers every adaptation or makes extra sessions free of recovery demands.
Torvik et al. (2022) · Bucher et al. (2018) · abstract
Does SkiErg training replace cross-country skiing?
The machine offers double-poling practice, but the cited studies do not establish equivalence to skiing or a universal direction and magnitude of training transfer.
