Start with access, not a promised result

Concept2 supplies SkiErgs for HYROX® under its global partnership. In Singles 26/27, the SkiErg is station 1 after run 1. Practising on the same equipment family can familiarise you with the machine, but home ownership is not a race-entry requirement.

Before deciding, list the access you already have, travel time, available space and budget. Test a machine if possible. A purchase is not automatically justified by entering one race, several races or having a particular number of weeks left to prepare.

Price the complete setup

Checked on 17 September 2026: the US manufacturer lists the SkiErg with PM5 at USD 850. The standard floor stand is USD 220, giving USD 1,070 for those two items before applicable tax and delivery. The stand is an accessory, not a second ergometer or a complete machine at the stand-only price.

Get a local delivered quote, including any installation work and accessories you choose. These US figures are not EUR or CHF prices and do not establish local tax, shipping or import costs. Do not assume an advertised item price is your total setup budget.

Measure the installed configuration

The manufacturer’s assembly document gives the wall-mounted unit as 52 × 40.6 × 216 cm, excluding the user, and a training area of 60 × 127 × 216 cm. The standard stand installation is 60 × 127 × 216 cm; the wide stand is approximately 81.3 × 132 × 215.9 cm. Width, depth and height are in that order.

Check the exact current variant, movement space and access route in your room. The wall setup is secured to the wall; the instructions do not describe a fold-flat storage mode. Follow the wall-specific installation instructions and obtain professional help for unsuitable or uncertain construction. Do not rely on a generic two-bolt prescription, 1.5 m above your hands or a body-height-based ceiling guarantee.

Compare ownership with your actual gym costs

Use a simple personal worksheet: purchase plus delivery, installation and expected upkeep, compared with costs you would actually avoid. If you keep the gym membership for other training, count no membership saving. Also compare access to coaching, other equipment and the time you expect to save; home and gym options vary.

Illustration only: USD 1,200 of setup cost divided by USD 50 of genuinely avoided monthly cost is 24 months, before upkeep and resale. If avoided monthly cost is zero, that calculation has no finite payback. These invented inputs explain the arithmetic; they are not a market estimate or investment return forecast.

Plan for maintenance and used-equipment checks

For a used unit, identify the model and monitor, inspect operation and mounting, and compare the condition with the manufacturer’s maintenance guidance. Ask about service history and the included stand or brackets. The current black-machine floor stand is not compatible with the earlier grey SkiErg.

Concept2 lists cord, fastener and pulley inspections and flywheel cleaning. Ownership therefore does not mean no upkeep. There is no verified ten-year, five-to-seven-sessions-per-week wear-free lifespan or universal USD 500–700 used value established here. Obtain condition-specific repair and replacement estimates.

Check how workout logging works

ErgData supports PM5-equipped machines and connects by Bluetooth. Its current documentation describes workout setup, analysis and Online Logbook synchronisation, with connections to other platforms. Check the setup required for your chosen destination rather than assuming every session reaches every service automatically.

Confirm that a used machine has the monitor and firmware you need. The current ErgData app is PM5-only; a machine’s age or a seller’s “Concept2” label alone does not establish compatibility.

Keep the purchase separate from the training prescription

The cited Grgic review concerns resistance-training strength outcomes. It does not establish that three weekly SkiErg sessions improve 1,000 m times 15–20% faster than one at equal volume. Its volume-matched strength subgroup found no significant frequency effect. Do not use that paper as proof of a home-purchase performance advantage.

Session duration also depends on pace: five minutes of preparation plus 3 × 500 m at 2:30 per 500 m and two 90-second rests totals 15:30, before any cool-down or setup. It is not universally a 15-minute session. The four-week example has two possible sessions weekly; adapt it within wider preparation for running and all stations.

FAQ

Is buying a SkiErg always worth it for HYROX®?

No universal payback or improvement rate is established here. Compare your actual access, expected use, space and complete cost, including any gym expenses you will continue paying.

Are wall mounting and the floor stand different machines?

The support differs; the optional stand supports the SkiErg without wall mounting. Verify what a quoted package includes rather than confusing the stand price with a complete machine price.

Concept2 · Floor Stand (US)

Can I assume the wall version folds away?

No. Plan from its installed dimensions and the manufacturer’s mounting instructions, which do not describe fold-flat storage.

Concept2 · Assembly instructions, p. 4

What should I check on a used SkiErg?

Confirm the model, monitor, mounting parts and operating condition. Inspect wear using the manufacturer’s guidance and price necessary repairs; no universal used-price band is verified here.

Which damper setting should I use at home?

Concept2 suggests trying 3–5 and adjusting as you learn. That is not a fixed drag factor of 90–120. Singles 26/27 has an adjustable preset of 6; practise your chosen setting rather than assuming all machines feel identical.
