Anterior

Anterior means at or toward the front of the body in the standard anatomical position. “Anterior chain” is an informal training label, not one discrete anatomical structure.
Definition
Anterior means at or toward the front of the body in the standard anatomical position; posterior means at or toward the back. The term describes locations such as the tibialis anterior, the anterior compartment of the leg and the front surface of a structure.

What this means in HYROX®
Coaches sometimes use “anterior chain” for several muscles on the front of the body. These muscles do not form one discrete anatomical unit: the quadriceps extend the knee, the iliopsoas flexes the hip, and rectus abdominis contributes to trunk flexion and support. HYROX® includes running, wall balls, lunges, a sled push and other tasks, but the rulebook does not establish that one “chain” drives the race or that a particular fatigue pattern diagnoses an imbalance.

Programming and symptoms
No evidence reviewed for this page supports a universal 1:1 or 1:1.5 anterior-to-posterior training ratio, one hinge set for every squat set, or mandatory stretching after long runs. Exercise selection and volume should follow the athlete’s goals, training history, tolerance and overall programme. Anterior knee pain has multiple possible causes and cannot be diagnosed as “anterior-chain overuse” from soreness or station times alone; persistent or concerning pain warrants qualified assessment.

Related terms
Anterior is the opposite of posterior. The sagittal plane divides the body into left and right portions; “anterior” remains a direction and does not mean that every front-body muscle acts only in that plane.

FAQ
What is the anterior chain?
It is an informal coaching label for several muscles on the front of the body. Those muscles have distinct anatomy and actions, so the term should not be treated as one diagnostic structure.

Does anterior-chain dominance explain HYROX® fatigue or knee pain?
The sources reviewed here do not establish that diagnosis. Fatigue and pain can have several causes and require evidence specific to the athlete and outcome.
