Drop Set

A drop set continues an exercise after reducing the load, usually with little rest, to extend the set. Protocols differ in load reductions, stages and proximity to failure.
Method and evidence
A drop set starts with a loaded set, reduces resistance and continues for one or more stages. It is often time-efficient and acutely demanding. Reviews find hypertrophy and strength outcomes broadly comparable with traditional training rather than universally superior, while perceived exertion and lactate can be higher.

Programming
Choose exercise, initial load, reductions, stopping point and recovery for the athlete. Training to complete failure at every stage is not an absolute requirement and may add fatigue. Drop sets can save time or add volume, but fixed 20–30% drops and weekly frequencies are not universal rules. They do not reproduce HYROX® stations or guarantee fatigue resistance.

FAQ
Are drop sets better for growth?
Current reviews do not show universal hypertrophy superiority over traditional sets.
Must every stage reach failure?
No. The stopping point should match the goal, technique and fatigue cost.
