Forearm Flexors

The anterior forearm contains muscles that flex the wrist, fingers or thumb. Finger flexors contribute directly to closing the hand and power grip.
Definition
The anterior forearm contains superficial, intermediate and deep muscles with different attachments and actions. Flexor carpi radialis and flexor carpi ulnaris flex the wrist; flexor digitorum superficialis flexes mainly the proximal finger joints; flexor digitorum profundus flexes the distal finger joints and contributes to power grip. Palmaris longus is variable and may be absent. It is therefore inaccurate to give every forearm flexor one medial-epicondyle origin or one shared insertion.

HYROX® context
Sled Pull requires handling a rope, Farmers Carry requires holding kettlebells, and rowing requires holding a handle. These tasks can involve finger and wrist flexors, but the current HYROX® rules do not establish maximal continuous gripping, identify one muscle group as the limiter, or show that grip failure is among the most common causes of lost time. Sandbag Lunges require the bag to remain on both shoulders rather than proving dependence on forearm-flexor endurance.

Training and grip fatigue
Loaded carries, hangs, wrist or finger exercises and rope practice can expose the hand and forearm to different grip demands. The reviewed evidence does not establish one exercise as most race-specific or more effective, universal sets to failure, fixed distances or repetitions, training two to three times weekly, a blanket ban on straps, or guaranteed prevention of grip failure. Load and recovery should reflect the athlete, the exercise and the wider programme.

Finger flexors close the hand while the brachioradialis and brachialis flex the elbow. The latissimus dorsi acts at the shoulder; pulling tasks coordinate these distinct functions.

FAQ
How do I prevent grip failure during HYROX®?
No method guarantees prevention. Practise relevant holds progressively, manage total load and technique, and investigate recurrent pain, numbness or unexpected weakness rather than diagnosing a single muscle from split time.

Should I use grip trainers for HYROX® preparation?
They are one option, but the reviewed sources do not show they are inferior or superior to hangs, carries or rope work for HYROX® outcomes. Choose tools that match the required task and can be progressed safely.
