Ground Contact Time

Ground Contact Time — The duration each foot spends on the ground during running. Shorter ground contact time generally indicates more efficient, elastic running—a marker of running economy.
Definition and limits
Ground contact time is the interval during a running step when the foot is in contact with the ground. It changes with speed, gait, surface, fatigue, footwear and measurement method. Shorter is not automatically better: a 2024 meta-analysis found a trivial, non-significant association between contact time and running economy across observational studies.
