A squat exercise used in HYROX training.

The heels elevated kettlebell goblet squat uses a kettlebell horn grip with heels on a plate for deep, quad-dominant squats that prepare for HYROX wall balls.

Definition

The heels elevated kettlebell goblet squat is identical in pattern to the heels elevated dumbbell goblet squat, but uses a kettlebell held by the horns at chest height. The kettlebell's compact shape makes it easier to hold in the goblet position for higher-rep sets, and the heels elevation allows deep squatting despite ankle mobility limitations.

Technique & Form

  1. Starting position - Place heels on a small plate or wedge. Hold a kettlebell by the horns at chest height, elbows down.
  2. Descent - Squat deep with an upright torso. Use the elbows to push the knees apart at the bottom.
  3. Drive phase - Press through the full foot to stand.
  4. Breathing - Inhale and brace before descending; exhale as you stand.
  5. Tempo - 3 seconds down, 1 second up.

Muscles Worked

  • Primary movers: Quadriceps, gluteus maximus
  • Stabilizers: Core, adductors, upper back

Common Mistakes

  • Rounding the upper back - Letting the kettlebell pull the chest down. Fix: keep the elbows pointing down and the chest tall.
  • Rocking forward - Fix: distribute weight evenly across the foot.

Benefits

  • Kettlebell horn grip is more comfortable for high-rep sets than holding a dumbbell.
  • All the ankle mobility and quad emphasis benefits of heels elevation.
  • Teaches the deep squat for wall ball and thruster preparation.

HYROX® Context

This squat variation supports Wall Balls and Sled Push stations by building quad endurance through deep squats. The kettlebell horn grip allows comfortable high-rep sets (15-25 reps) that match the metabolic demand of wall ball station work. Program 3-4 sets of 12-20 reps as a conditioning squat or warm-up, pairing with dumbbell thrusters.
