Lactate threshold: definitions, testing and pacing

Lactate threshold is a family of test-derived intensity markers based on how blood lactate changes during increasing exercise; methods and numerical results differ.
Concept and measurement
There is no single universally defined lactate threshold. Methods identify an initial rise, fixed concentrations, curve breakpoints or an intensity related to maximal lactate steady state. Protocol, sampling, nutrition, prior exercise and analysis can affect the result. A value from one method should not be substituted into another method’s zones.

Use in training
Threshold measures can help assess endurance and prescribe intensity when the method is stated and repeated consistently. Lactate is a metabolic intermediate and fuel, not simply a waste product that directly causes fatigue. Heart rate, pace and perceived effort can accompany testing but do not prove a blood-lactate threshold. No threshold value alone predicts a HYROX® result.

FAQ
Is it always 4 mmol/L?
No. That is one fixed-concentration convention among many methods.
Can a watch measure it?
A watch may estimate a threshold, but it does not directly measure blood lactate.
