Lean Mass

Lean Mass — Total body weight minus fat mass—includes muscle, bone, water, and organs. Building lean mass while controlling fat is the ideal HYROX® body composition strategy.
What lean mass means
Lean mass is a body-composition term, not a direct measurement of skeletal muscle. Terminology varies by method: fat-free mass excludes fat mass and includes water, protein and mineral; lean soft tissue excludes bone mineral. Neither quantity should be treated as identical to skeletal-muscle mass. State the compartment and method when reporting a result.

Measurement and interpretation
Body-composition methods estimate different compartments and are not interchangeable. In athletes, BIA overestimated fat-free mass relative to DXA by an average of 2.78 kg in a meta-analysis, with wide individual agreement limits. Hydration, food, exercise and device protocol can affect estimates. Compare repeated measurements with the same validated method under similar conditions. DXA is not a direct muscle measurement, and repeated exposure should have a justified purpose.

HYROX® context
Muscle contributes to force production, but body composition alone does not determine performance. Current Singles races combine eight 1 km runs with eight stations, so results also depend on aerobic capacity, movement skill, pacing, fatigue resistance and other factors. No reviewed source establishes an ideal lean-mass percentage for HYROX® or validates the claimed male and female optimum ranges.

Building or preserving fat-free mass
Progressive resistance training can increase strength and fat-free mass, but the response depends on training history, programme, energy intake, recovery and measurement method. A meta-analysis found a modest additional fat-free-mass benefit from protein supplementation during resistance training, with no further average benefit beyond about 1.62 g/kg/day in that dataset. That breakpoint is not a mandatory target for every athlete. Evidence does not support one universal weekly frequency, set count, calorie surplus, macro split or guaranteed 8–12-week outcome.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is lean mass the same as muscle mass?
No. Lean or fat-free compartments include more than skeletal muscle, and the exact definition depends on the measurement model.

What is the best way to track it?
There is no universally best test for every purpose. Use a suitable validated method consistently, standardise the conditions and interpret change within that method’s uncertainty.

Is there an ideal lean-mass percentage for HYROX®?
No validated HYROX®-specific percentage was found. Training and body-composition decisions should reflect the athlete, health, event demands and measured performance.

Can I build lean mass while training for HYROX®?
Yes, especially in the off-season and base training phases. Prioritize strength training 3-4 times per week, eat in a slight caloric surplus with high protein, and allow adequate recovery. During peak race preparation, the goal shifts to maintaining lean mass while building race-specific endurance. Repz periodizes these phases to optimize both.
