Metabolic Conditioning

Metabolic conditioning (MetCon) combines strength and cardiovascular exercises in high-intensity circuits to improve all three energy systems. HYROX is fundamentally a MetCon event — 8 runs interspersed with 8 stations demanding sustained performance across varied movements.
Definition and intensity
Metabolic conditioning is a broad programming label for sessions that combine repeated exercise bouts and recovery to challenge cardiorespiratory and muscular work capacity. It is not one standard protocol or a separate energy system. Relative intensity depends on fitness and can be monitored with workload, heart rate, breathing or perceived effort.

Programming and specificity
Choose movements, intervals and rest that preserve safe technique and match the session goal. Progress total work or difficulty gradually and allow recovery within the wider plan. Such sessions may develop conditioning, but outcomes depend on programme design. They do not guarantee a calorie total, afterburn, injury protection or HYROX® time, and they do not reproduce the specific adaptations of running unless running is trained.
