Oxygen debt is a historical recovery term. EPOC describes oxygen consumption remaining above resting levels after exercise without assuming one cause.

Modern meaning

“Oxygen debt” is an older umbrella term. Current exercise physiology usually describes excess post-exercise oxygen consumption, the elevation in oxygen use during recovery relative to baseline. Recovery processes are multiple; EPOC is not simply oxygen repaying lactate production.

Magnitude and interpretation

EPOC varies with exercise intensity, duration, modality, baseline choice and measurement window. Reviews often find higher values after interval or sprint work than matched moderate exercise, but the extra energy expenditure is protocol-dependent and does not guarantee fat loss or race improvement. No universal duration or calorie multiplier applies.
