The pectoral region includes pectoralis major and pectoralis minor. Pectoralis major moves the humerus; pectoralis minor acts on the scapula.

Definition

The pectoral region includes the superficial pectoralis major and the deeper pectoralis minor. Pectoralis major arises from the clavicle, sternum, upper costal cartilages and external-oblique aponeurosis and inserts on the lateral lip of the humeral intertubercular groove. It contributes to humeral flexion, adduction and internal rotation. Pectoralis minor runs from ribs 3–5 to the coracoid process and contributes to scapular protraction and depression.

HYROX® context

Wall balls, sled pushing and rowing place different demands on the shoulder girdle. The current HYROX® rules define how those stations are performed, but they do not identify the pectorals as the primary wall-ball limiter, quantify their contribution to sled force, or show that pectoral endurance directly determines station time. The reviewed sources also do not establish an eccentric pectoral role during rowing recovery or a special performance role during running arm swing.

Training and fatigue

Push-ups, bench presses and other resisted pressing movements can train actions involving pectoralis major. Exercise choice, load and volume should fit the athlete and the full programme. The sources reviewed here do not establish push-ups as uniquely most specific for HYROX®, universal sets or repetitions, a mandatory equal-or-greater pulling ratio, or that such a ratio prevents shoulder problems or rounded posture. Chest fatigue during wall balls is not specific enough to identify one muscle or prescribe one remedy.

Related terms

Pectoralis major can work with the deltoids and serratus anterior during pressing tasks. The latissimus dorsi and trapezius have distinct shoulder and scapular actions rather than forming a simple universal push-pull balance.

FAQ

Do I need a strong bench press for HYROX®?

The reviewed evidence does not define a required bench-press strength or prove that maximal bench strength is less important than one specific endurance range. Programme pressing according to the athlete’s needs and total training load.

Why do my chest muscles fatigue during wall balls?

Wall balls involve coordinated lower-body, trunk and upper-body work. Fatigue can have several contributors, so sensation or a slower split alone does not prove that pectoralis major is the limiter.
