Plantar flexion is an ankle movement that lifts the heel or points the toes downward; the gastrocnemius and soleus are its primary muscles.

Movement and anatomy

Plantar flexion occurs at the ankle when the heel lifts or the toes point downward. The gastrocnemius and soleus are the primary plantar flexors and join the Achilles tendon at the calcaneus. The gastrocnemius crosses the knee and ankle; the soleus acts at the ankle independently of knee position. Other posterior and lateral lower-leg muscles can assist, so plantar flexion is not produced by one muscle alone.

Running and HYROX® context

Ankle plantar flexion contributes to late stance and toe-off in running, while the Achilles tendon stores and returns elastic energy. HYROX® Singles includes about 8 km of running plus eight workout stations. The rulebook does not state a stride count, calf-force multiple, or required plantar-flexion contribution for Sled Push, Burpee Broad Jumps or Sandbag Lunges. A slow split therefore cannot be diagnosed as weak calves from the rules alone.

Evidence for training and cramps

A systematic review found that concurrent strength and endurance training improved plantar-flexor strength in distance runners, but it found no studies showing how those adaptations changed running biomechanics or neuromuscular variables during running. This does not establish that running is insufficient, that one calf routine is required, or that a fixed weekly dose improves HYROX® performance. Exercise-associated cramps have several proposed mechanisms; dehydration, electrolyte loss and fatigue are not a universal single explanation.

FAQ

Why might my calves cramp during a race?

Exercise-associated cramps can have different contributing factors, and current reviews do not support diagnosing every calf cramp as plantar-flexor endurance, dehydration or electrolyte loss. Recurrent, severe or otherwise concerning symptoms warrant individual assessment.

Do I need separate calf training?

That depends on the athlete and programme. Strength work can increase plantar-flexor strength in distance runners, but the reviewed evidence does not establish one mandatory exercise mix, 2–3 weekly sessions, or direct improvement in HYROX® splits.
