Positive Split — Running the second half of a race slower than the first half. Common in HYROX® when athletes start too fast and fatigue accumulates through later stations.

Definition

A positive split means the later part of an event is completed more slowly than the earlier part. It describes the observed pacing pattern; it does not by itself identify the cause. Terrain, weather, event duration, station work, fitness and the chosen starting intensity can all affect splits.

Interpretation for HYROX®

HYROX® alternates running and stations, so comparable segments are needed before calling a change a pacing failure. Even pacing may be a useful plan, but a positive split is not automatically avoidable or proof of poor preparation. Test sustainable efforts in training and adjust from actual segment data rather than universal percentage thresholds.
