The rhomboid major and minor are upper-back muscles that connect the spine to the medial border of the scapula. They contribute to scapular retraction, downward rotation and shoulder-girdle stability.

Anatomy and function

Rhomboid major and minor lie deep to trapezius and are supplied mainly by the dorsal scapular nerve. They draw the scapula medially and contribute to downward rotation and stabilization. Scapular movement is coordinated with trapezius, serratus anterior, levator scapulae and other shoulder muscles; the rhomboids do not act alone or hold every task in one fixed position.

Posture and scapular control

Resting scapular position and movement vary substantially among people, including those without pain. Evidence has not established a simple rule in which weak rhomboids cause rounded shoulders, pain, poor running posture or lost pulling force. Posture can change with task and fatigue, but visual rounding does not identify one weak muscle. Persistent pain, weakness or winging needs assessment rather than a posture diagnosis from appearance.

Exercise and programming

Rows, pull-aparts and other movements involving scapular retraction can load the rhomboids alongside trapezius, posterior shoulder and arm muscles. A face pull is not a proven rhomboid isolation exercise or universally “best” choice. Choose load, range, sets, repetitions and frequency for the goal, skill, symptoms and recovery. Clinical trials support scapular exercise as one possible component for some people with shoulder pain, but do not establish high repetitions, every upper-body session or a fixed twice-weekly heavy-row rule for healthy athletes.

HYROX® relevance

HYROX® Singles includes SkiErg, Sled Pull, Row and Farmers Carry. These whole-body tasks require changing shoulder, scapular, trunk and limb forces across their phases, so rhomboids may contribute to control and retraction without remaining pinned back and down. No direct evidence reviewed here shows that isolated rhomboid work improves a station, prevents shoulder rounding across all race segments or makes a particular Face Pull dose improve HYROX® performance.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do the rhomboids do?

They contribute to medial movement, downward rotation and stabilization of the scapula as part of a coordinated shoulder-girdle system. Their role changes with arm position and task.

Do Face Pulls improve HYROX® performance?

Face Pulls can train several upper-back and shoulder muscles, but direct HYROX®-performance evidence and one validated dose are absent. Use them when they fit the goal and retain task-specific station practice.

Your rhomboids don't train themselves - and generic gym programs rarely target them for the endurance HYROX® demands. Your race data shows which muscle groups hold you back; Repz turns that into targeted station training. Find Your Weak Station →
