Sumo Deadlift

The sumo deadlift is a wide-stance compound pulling exercise that develops hip extension, adductor strength, and grip endurance with less lower back stress than conventional deadlifts — transferring directly to HYROX sled pull, sled push, and running performance.
Technique and evidence
A sumo deadlift uses a wider stance with the hands inside the legs. Stance width and toe angle vary with anatomy and rules. A 2025 study in experienced men found technique-dependent joint motion, moments and acute EMG differences, but these findings do not identify a universally safer or stronger style.

Programming
Choose stance, range and load that allow a stable foot position, controlled bar path and tolerable hip and knee motion. Individualized progressive loading is supported; exact stance angles, muscle-isolation claims and guaranteed back protection, injury prevention or HYROX® improvement are not.

Does one measurement prove an outcome?
No. Acute or field measures require context and do not establish long-term adaptation.
