Hyrox Doubles Training Plan: Partner Prep
HYROX® Doubles requires a different training strategy than solo racing. Learn how to prepare as a team using recent seasons of race data.

Start with the current Doubles rules
Both partners start together and complete all eight run segments together. At each station one works while the other rests under You Go I Go; the pair normally chooses the work block before switching. Both must enter and leave stations together, and the resting athlete stays standing in the designated zone. A training plan based on partners alternating runs or compulsory equal station halves does not match the current format.

Build the plan around the athletes
Choose training frequency, duration and progression from each athlete’s experience, current load, running capacity, station skill and recovery. A useful sequence is: learn movement standards; build tolerable running and strength volume; combine running with selected stations; then practise race-relevant execution. Increase load gradually and change one main variable at a time. No evidence reviewed proves four fixed three-week phases, a universal aerobic/strength percentage or a minimum number of partner days.

Practise running and stations
Practise a sustainable shared running pace because both athletes run every segment. At stations, compare legal work blocks and choose them by current ability rather than assuming equal halves or permanently assigning whole stations. Rehearse clear voluntary exchange cues, joint entry/exit and the standing-rest rule. Record repeatable measures such as valid repetitions, distance, time and perceived effort, but a 10-bpm difference or a six-second handoff is not a validated decision threshold.

Use simulations selectively
Full 8 km/eight-station simulations impose substantial load. They are optional, not a required three-to-five-session sequence. Use reduced rounds to test pacing, standards and work division, and schedule any larger rehearsal far enough from competition to recover. A race-effort simulation one week after another is not established as necessary. Stop or scale when technique fails, pain appears or recovery is inadequate.

Taper without a rigid calendar
Taper evidence in endurance athletes supports reducing volume while maintaining some intensity and frequency, but effective duration and magnitude vary. It does not validate this article’s fixed weeks 10–12 percentages or four rest days for every HYROX® athlete. Adjust the final reduction to prior load, experience, soreness, travel and response to earlier tapers.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do partners alternate the runs?
No. Both partners must complete every run segment together. Station work uses You Go I Go.
HYROX® Doubles Rulebook 2026/27
How often should we train together?
There is no universal evidence-based number. Schedule enough joint practice for shared running, legal station work and communication while preserving recovery.

How should station work be divided?
The pair may generally choose its YGIG work blocks. Test legal, repeatable blocks and revise them as fatigue and ability change.

How many full simulations are required?
None is mandated by evidence or the rulebook. Reduced rehearsals can test execution with less fatigue; use a full simulation only when appropriate and recoverable.

Repz recent seasons of race data shows that Doubles teams finish an average of 22% faster than solo Open athletes.[1] That gap is not purely a function of two athletes splitting the load. It reflects a format where intelligent teams can push harder on each individual segment (because the alternating structure provides a genuine full-station recovery window) while simultaneously running down avoidable time losses in transitions.
| Static plan (PDF or article) | Adaptive app (Repz) | |
|---|---|---|
| Missed a session | The week silently breaks | Tuesday adjusts automatically |
| You got stronger | Weights stay generic | The next session loads your new numbers |
| Equipment is busy | Improvise and hope | Swaps the movement, keeps the stimulus |
| Race date changes | Re-plan everything by hand | Cycles re-time to peak on race day |
The plan below works. If you want it to manage itself around your life, your gym, and your goal time: Repz builds it for you and adapts it every week. Official Online Training Partner of HYROX®, free for 7 days.
The handoff itself is a competitive variable. Repz timing data shows unpracticed teams average 8–12 seconds of unnecessary time per handoff across 16+ transition moments in a race. That is 2–4 minutes of non-fitness time loss, entirely preventable with deliberate transition drilling.
From Repz doubles data, the highest-variance stations across teams are Sled Push, Sled Pull, and Sandbag Lunges, which reward raw force output and tend to show the largest performance gaps between partners. SkiErg, Rowing, and Wall Balls show smaller relative gaps and are more interchangeable. Burpee Broad Jumps are load-neutral but punish athletes who are still heart-rate elevated from the run; assign this station to whichever partner recovers faster between aerobic efforts.
How many weeks of doubles training does a team actually need before race day? Repz recent seasons of race data shows that doubles teams with four or more weeks of joint training finish 7–12 minutes faster than teams who show up without shared preparation. Twelve weeks is optimal; eight weeks is sufficient for most teams. Less than four weeks together is a significant race-day risk regardless of individual fitness levels.
Is there an app for HYROX® training? Yes. Repz is built specifically for HYROX® as the Official Online Training Partner: it creates an adaptive plan around your race date, your gym setup, and your goal time, then adjusts it every week based on what you actually trained. Generic fitness apps can schedule workouts, but they do not program the eight stations or compromised running.
