Start with the current Doubles rules

Both partners start together and complete all eight run segments together. At each station one works while the other rests under You Go I Go; the pair normally chooses the work block before switching. Both must enter and leave stations together, and the resting athlete stays standing in the designated zone. A training plan based on partners alternating runs or compulsory equal station halves does not match the current format.

Build the plan around the athletes

Choose training frequency, duration and progression from each athlete’s experience, current load, running capacity, station skill and recovery. A useful sequence is: learn movement standards; build tolerable running and strength volume; combine running with selected stations; then practise race-relevant execution. Increase load gradually and change one main variable at a time. No evidence reviewed proves four fixed three-week phases, a universal aerobic/strength percentage or a minimum number of partner days.

Practise running and stations

Practise a sustainable shared running pace because both athletes run every segment. At stations, compare legal work blocks and choose them by current ability rather than assuming equal halves or permanently assigning whole stations. Rehearse clear voluntary exchange cues, joint entry/exit and the standing-rest rule. Record repeatable measures such as valid repetitions, distance, time and perceived effort, but a 10-bpm difference or a six-second handoff is not a validated decision threshold.

Use simulations selectively

Full 8 km/eight-station simulations impose substantial load. They are optional, not a required three-to-five-session sequence. Use reduced rounds to test pacing, standards and work division, and schedule any larger rehearsal far enough from competition to recover. A race-effort simulation one week after another is not established as necessary. Stop or scale when technique fails, pain appears or recovery is inadequate.

Taper without a rigid calendar

Taper evidence in endurance athletes supports reducing volume while maintaining some intensity and frequency, but effective duration and magnitude vary. It does not validate this article’s fixed weeks 10–12 percentages or four rest days for every HYROX® athlete. Adjust the final reduction to prior load, experience, soreness, travel and response to earlier tapers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do partners alternate the runs?

No. Both partners must complete every run segment together. Station work uses You Go I Go.

HYROX® Doubles Rulebook 2026/27

How often should we train together?

There is no universal evidence-based number. Schedule enough joint practice for shared running, legal station work and communication while preserving recovery.

How should station work be divided?

The pair may generally choose its YGIG work blocks. Test legal, repeatable blocks and revise them as fatigue and ability change.

How many full simulations are required?

None is mandated by evidence or the rulebook. Reduced rehearsals can test execution with less fatigue; use a full simulation only when appropriate and recoverable.
