HYROX Doubles vs Singles: Which Format Fits You?
Compare running, station sharing, loads and preparation in HYROX Singles and Doubles under the 2026/27 rules, then choose your format.

In HYROX® Singles, you complete the running and stations yourself. In Doubles, both partners run the full course together and share the station work. The difference is how you distribute that work, not a shorter running distance.
What stays the same
Both formats alternate eight running segments with eight stations. Each athlete covers the designated 8 km of running. The station order is SkiErg, Sled Push, Sled Pull, Burpee Broad Jumps, Rowing, Farmers Carry, Sandbag Lunges and Wall Balls. A running segment may contain several venue laps; follow the event's lap instructions rather than assuming one circuit equals 1 km.
The station totals are 1,000 m SkiErg, 50 m Sled Push, 50 m Sled Pull, 80 m Burpee Broad Jumps, 1,000 m Rowing, 200 m Farmers Carry, 100 m Sandbag Lunges and 100 valid Wall Balls. In Singles these are your individual totals; in Doubles they are the team's totals. These are the 2026/27 standards, so an older article describing 75 Wall Balls is not the right reference for this season.
What changes when you add a partner
In Doubles, one partner works at a time at the stations while the other follows the station's resting-position rules. You decide the division of work. Equal shares are an option, not a requirement, and you do not have to alternate every repetition. A planned split can change during the race.
Both partners must stay together during the runs and enter and leave stations together. The faster runner cannot race ahead and begin the station while waiting for the other. A shared station plan therefore needs to account for the run that follows, not just each athlete's isolated station time.
For example, a team might divide 100 Wall Balls into ten sets of ten, alternating the working athlete. That would give each person 50 valid repetitions if every set is completed as planned. Another distribution is possible. Neither this example nor the rules establish the best set size for your team.
Changeovers have movement-specific conditions. You cannot hand the SkiErg handles directly to your partner. At Wall Balls, a flying change in which one partner throws and the other catches into a squat is prohibited. Learn those details in the Doubles guide before copying a gym relay.
Are Doubles weights lighter
Sharing work does not make the equipment lighter. Corresponding Women's, Women's Pro, Men's and Men's Pro divisions use the same prescribed loads in Singles and Doubles. Mixed Doubles uses the loads shown below for both partners.
| Doubles division | Sled Push / Pull, including sled | Farmers Carry | Sandbag | Wall Ball |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Women | 102 / 78 kg | 2 × 16 kg | 10 kg | 4 kg |
| Women Pro | 152 / 103 kg | 2 × 24 kg | 20 kg | 6 kg |
| Men | 152 / 103 kg | 2 × 24 kg | 20 kg | 6 kg |
| Men Pro | 202 / 153 kg | 2 × 32 kg | 30 kg | 9 kg |
| Mixed | 152 / 103 kg | 2 × 24 kg | 20 kg | 6 kg |
The Wall Ball target is 2.70 m for women and 3.00 m for men. In Mixed, the ball remains 6 kg when partners change; the applicable target height changes. The five regular Doubles divisions do not include a Mixed Pro division. World Championship entry and standards have their own conditions; do not treat a regular entry as a qualification.
How to compare difficulty and finish times
Sharing station work can reduce the amount you personally complete, but it does not guarantee that the race will feel easier. Your division, the work you take on, your shared running pace and your preparation all matter. You are also responsible for coordinating changes and complying with partner-position rules.
A Doubles finish time is a team result. It cannot be converted into a Singles result by halving it, subtracting a fixed number of minutes or applying a universal percentage. Both athletes still run 8 km, and station splits need not be equal. When reviewing results, compare the same format and division and check the event context. Treat a personal Singles result and a team Doubles result as separate benchmarks.
Choose according to the race you want
Choose Singles if you want an individual result and independent decisions. You choose your own running pace and station breaks, and your preparation does not require a partner's availability. You must also be ready to complete every station's full volume at your division's load.
Choose Doubles if you want to prepare and race as a team. Discuss the goal, shared pace, equipment loads and practical availability before buying tickets. Different strengths can inform the station split, but neither partner can delegate the running. Use the partner checklist to turn that conversation into a trial session.
Being new to HYROX® does not automatically determine the format. Nor does sharing stations establish that racing is suitable during injury recovery. The rulebook requires injured racers to obtain medical clearance and contact HYROX® in advance about required adaptations; participation with these injury-related modifications is outside the official competition ranking.
Prepare for the format you selected
For Singles, check that your preparation covers the complete station totals. For Doubles, add legal changeover practice and shared running to your individual preparation. Start by learning the changes at a manageable effort, then use selected run-and-station combinations appropriate to your training. A full race simulation every week is not a rule or a universal requirement.
Record what happened during practice: who worked, how much they completed, whether the repetitions met the standard, and whether both could maintain the next shared run. That is more useful for your next decision than assuming a fixed Doubles intensity increase. The strategy article provides a station-plan template.
Frequently asked questions
Do Doubles athletes each run only 4 km?
No. Each partner completes the full designated 8 km, staying together during the running segments. Only the station workload is shared.
Must Doubles partners split every station equally?
No. The team chooses its shares within the station rules. There is no general requirement for 50/50 work or a change after every repetition.
Can I enter both Singles and Doubles?
The Doubles rulebook allows additional Singles participation. Check entry availability and the event schedule before booking. World Championship participation additionally requires the relevant qualification and non-conflicting allocated starts.
