Medicine Ball vs Wall Ball: Key Differences
“Medicine ball” and “wall ball” are not reliable universal construction categories. For HYROX, choose equipment by the current division load, target and intended wall-throw use.

The names do not define the construction
Product names overlap. One manufacturer sells 14-inch soft-shell products as “KG Medicine Balls” for wall-ball use, a smaller firm rubber medicine ball with bounceback, and a molded 14-inch medicine ball with bounceback that is also specified for wall throws. Check the actual model rather than assuming every medicine ball is small, hard or unsuitable.

Current HYROX® Singles requirements
All four standard Singles divisions complete 100 valid repetitions at station eight. Women Open use 4 kg at 2.70 m, Women Pro 6 kg at 2.70 m, Men Open 6 kg at 3.00 m, and Men Pro 9 kg at 3.00 m. The rulebook governs load, assigned physical target and valid movement; it does not create universal retail definitions for “medicine ball” and “wall ball.”

How to choose a training ball
Select a ball whose marked mass matches the division you are preparing for and that its manufacturer permits for repeated wall throws and catches. Check diameter, shell, seams or molded construction, rebound behaviour and condition for that model. Do not infer these properties from the product name alone.

Practice without invented guarantees
Race-load practice is a sensible specificity option, while lighter or different implements can be coaching tools when the purpose is clear. The reviewed sources do not prove fixed two-to-four-week progressions, heavier-ball transfer, exact impact reduction, injury prevention or that one construction always improves high-repetition performance.

Must the ball be 14 inches?
The reviewed rule section specifies marked mass and target, not a universal retail diameter. Some suitable products are 14 inches, but check event and product information.

Can I train with a bouncing ball?
A manufacturer may permit it for wall throws, but rebound changes handling. Use it only if safe for the space and understand that it may feel different from event equipment.

Should every session use race load?
No universal schedule is established. Race-load exposure can build familiarity; other loads can serve a defined coaching purpose without being claimed as equivalent.
