Suitcase Carry vs Farmers Carry
Suitcase carry vs farmers carry for HYROX® training: muscle activation, weight selection, form differences, and when to use each exercise in your race prep.

The movements are related but not interchangeable
A farmers carry uses one implement in each hand; a suitcase carry uses one hand and leaves the other side unloaded. Current Singles includes a 200 m kettlebell Farmers Carry with division-specific loads. It does not include a suitcase carry. Bilateral race practice is therefore the most specific option, while unilateral carrying can be an accessory variation.

What changes with one-sided loading
A one-sided load creates an external frontal-plane moment that the body must manage while walking. Studies report changes in trunk and hip muscle activity, joint moments and movement, but responses depend on load, side, gait and participant. It is reasonable to describe the suitcase carry as an asymmetric trunk-and-hip challenge; it is not justified to claim one exact muscle pattern, automatic correction of asymmetry or guaranteed transfer to running.

What bilateral carrying adds
Two implements allow a greater combined external load when each implement matches the unilateral load. Grip is required in both hands and the movement resembles the HYROX® station. Equal implements do not make internal loading perfectly symmetrical, and research does not establish a universal limiting factor, a fixed carry duration or superior posterior-chain adaptation. Practise the actual implement, load and rules when race specificity matters.

Technique and load selection
Use a clear path and loads that allow controlled pickup, walking and set-down. Keep the implements under control without prescribing one universal shoulder-blade, foot-strike, stride-length or torso position. Start below the load or distance that disrupts gait, grip or balance, then progress load, distance, time or turns separately. Switch sides on unilateral work; unequal capacity alone does not diagnose injury or dysfunction.

Programming for HYROX®
Retain bilateral carries because they match the race task. Add suitcase carries if a one-sided challenge serves the athlete's goal or equipment constraints. There is no validated 70:30 split, mandatory two-session schedule, exact percentage of race load or four-week progression. Dose by current strength, total grip and lower-body work, technique and recovery, and occasionally rehearse race distance and turns when prepared.

Limits and safety
Loaded carries can cause fatigue and alter gait; they are not proven to prevent back, hip or shoulder injury. Use secure implements and footwear, avoid crowded or slippery paths, and do not chase posture through pain. Stop for sharp pain, loss of control, dizziness or chest pain. Persistent symptoms or rehabilitation needs require individual clinical guidance.

FAQ
Which carry is more specific to HYROX®?
The bilateral kettlebell Farmers Carry, because that is the race station. Suitcase carries are optional accessory work.

Does the suitcase carry fix core imbalance?
It creates asymmetric demand and may reveal side-to-side differences, but a single exercise does not diagnose or guarantee correction of an imbalance.

Should the shoulder stay down and back?
Control the implement without forcing one universal scapular position. Comfortable joint motion and stable handling matter more than a rigid cue.

How heavy should I carry?
Choose a load you can pick up, walk, turn and set down with control. Progress one variable and include division-specific practice only when ready.

Can suitcase carries replace race-weight farmers carries?
Not completely. They train a related but different task; retain bilateral practice for race specificity.

Because Repz recent seasons of race data shows a consistent pattern: athletes who arrive at the Farmers Carry station after the first six events show lateral trunk drift, a sideways lean or hip drop that adds roughly 8–12 seconds per 100 m compared to athletes who walk that same weight with a stiff, upright torso. That drift is not a strength problem. It is a core anti-lateral-flexion problem. And the suitcase carry is the most targeted tool available for fixing it.
