Abduction moves a limb away from the body’s midline. At the hip, gluteus medius and minimus abduct the thigh and help control the pelvis during single-limb support.

Definition

Abduction is movement away from the body’s midline and is the anatomical opposite of adduction. Examples include raising an arm to the side, spreading the fingers and moving a leg laterally. Gluteus medius and minimus are primary hip abductors; their role during single-limb support includes countering pelvic drop.

Running and HYROX® context

HYROX® includes a total of 8 km of running plus eight workout stations. That format does not by itself show that hip-abductor weakness causes knee valgus, “energy leaks,” poor wall-ball alignment or transition instability. A 2026 review found insufficient evidence for a consistent association between hip-abductor strength and running biomechanics in healthy runners, and no convincing evidence that strengthening alone produces predictable changes in running kinematics or kinetics.

Training and interpretation

Lateral walks, side-lying leg raises and cable or machine abduction can load hip abduction, but the reviewed evidence does not establish one warm-up, fixed sets and repetitions, a required eccentric tempo or direct transfer to late-race resilience. A slower pace in later laps is not a diagnosis of abductor fatigue. A Trendelenburg sign is a clinical finding with several possible causes, and the running-injury review did not support a general predictive relation across injuries.

Related terms

Abduction is the opposite of adduction, usually occurs in the frontal plane, and moves in a lateral direction.

FAQ

What is the difference between abduction and adduction?

Abduction moves a segment away from the midline; adduction moves it toward the midline. The exact muscles and range depend on the joint and task.

Does weak hip abduction necessarily impair HYROX® running?

No direct HYROX® evidence cited here establishes that conclusion. Hip abductors help control the pelvis, but current healthy-runner evidence does not show a consistent strength-to-biomechanics relation.
