Adduction

Adduction moves a limb toward the body’s midline. At the hip, the adductor group produces this motion and can also contribute to pelvic control and other hip actions.
Definition
Adduction is movement toward the body’s midline and is the anatomical opposite of abduction. Hip adduction is produced mainly by adductor longus, brevis and magnus, with help from gracilis and pectineus. The adductor magnus also has a hip-extension role, and the group can help stabilize the pelvis and lower limb during stance.

What the evidence means for HYROX®
Running, lunges and squat-like HYROX® tasks involve the hip and pelvis, but anatomy alone does not show that stronger adductors improve race time, sled force transfer or wall-ball technique. The current HYROX® rulebook specifies the race movements; it does not prescribe adductor strength or establish those performance effects.

Training choices
The Copenhagen adduction exercise can increase hip-adduction strength. A 2025 review of 15 intervention studies found no statistically significant reduction in seasonal groin-injury prevalence, no additional benefit for the other performance measures, and rated all underlying evidence very low quality. A small 2024 trial in 30 male footballers with adductor-related groin pain found added Copenhagen exercise improved strength, pain and self-reported function during an eight-week rehabilitation programme; that result is not a universal prevention dose for healthy HYROX® athletes.

FAQ
Do weak adductors necessarily reduce HYROX® performance?
No direct evidence cited here establishes that conclusion. Hip adductors have clear anatomical roles, while a HYROX® performance effect would need to be tested directly.

Is the Copenhagen plank the best adductor exercise?
It is a supported option for increasing hip-adduction strength, but the evidence does not establish one best exercise or a universal injury-prevention programme for every athlete.
