Definition

The hip-adductor group commonly includes adductor longus, adductor brevis, adductor magnus, gracilis and pectineus. Attachments differ across the group rather than all sharing one origin and femoral insertion; gracilis crosses the knee. Hip adduction is their main shared action. Individual muscles can also contribute to hip flexion, extension or rotation depending on joint position, and the group can contribute during stance.

HYROX® context

Running, lunges, squats and sled work involve the hip and pelvis, but anatomy alone does not prove that adductors stabilize every stride, prevent knee collapse, or transfer force efficiently in each HYROX® task. The current rules define race movements without measuring adductor activation. Weakness is one possible clinical finding, but it does not by itself predict inefficient HYROX® running or groin strain across eight kilometres.

Training evidence

Copenhagen adduction exercise can increase hip-adduction strength. A 2025 review of 15 intervention studies found no statistically significant reduction in seasonal groin-injury prevalence, no additional benefit for other performance measures, and very-low-certainty evidence. A small trial in 30 male footballers with adductor-related groin pain reported improvements when Copenhagen exercise was added to an eight-week rehabilitation programme. This does not identify a best HYROX® exercise, prove direct running transfer or establish universal 3-by-20–30-second, lunge or sumo-squat doses.

Mobility and symptoms

“Tight” is not a diagnosis of tissue length, and limited hip motion, groin pain or reduced squat depth can have several causes. The reviewed sources do not show that high training volume inevitably shortens adductors or that stretching and foam rolling must always be used, maintain an optimal length, improve HYROX® performance or prevent injury. Persistent pain or loss of function warrants qualified assessment rather than self-diagnosis from station times.

Related terms

The adductors move opposite to the abductors in the anatomical frontal-plane sense, while quadriceps and gluteus maximus have distinct actions. Real tasks involve coordinated contributions rather than simple one-to-one opposites.

The Copenhagen plank is one of the most effective exercises because it builds isometric adductor strength relevant to single-leg running stability. Pair it with lateral lunges for dynamic strength. Repz performance data can reveal whether groin fatigue is limiting your station times.

FAQ

Can “tight” adductors impair HYROX® performance?

Symptoms or limited motion may affect a task, but “tightness” alone does not identify the cause or prove a performance loss. Assessment should consider the individual movement and symptoms.

What is the best adductor exercise?

No universal best exercise is established. Copenhagen exercise can increase adduction strength, but selection and dose depend on goals, ability, symptoms and the total programme.
