AMRAP

As many rounds or repetitions as possible in a defined time.
Definition
AMRAP means “as many rounds and/or repetitions as possible” in a stated time. The workout specifies one movement or a circuit, a time limit and the counting method. The score is the completed rounds plus any additional repetitions, or simply total repetitions for a single movement. This matches CrossFit's official terminology.
How the format works
Time is fixed while the amount of completed work varies. Movement standards, load, sequence and any planned rest must therefore be written before the clock starts. “AMRAP” alone does not specify a duration, intensity, exercise selection or training effect.
Choose movements you can perform consistently and scale load or complexity when technique would otherwise deteriorate. Effort is relative to the person and the session. The CDC intensity guide explains that the same activity can feel different to people with different fitness and offers perceived effort and the talk test as general ways to gauge aerobic intensity. It does not prescribe one heart-rate range for every AMRAP.
Pacing and comparison
Use early rounds to judge whether the pace and movement quality are sustainable. Slow down, modify the movement or stop if control is lost or symptoms are concerning. There is no evidence-based percentage split that is correct for every AMRAP.
A repeated AMRAP can compare performance only when duration, movements, standards, load, equipment and conditions remain comparable. A higher score then means more work was recorded in that specific test. It does not by itself identify the cause, measure every aspect of fitness or prove that the programme produced the change.
HYROX® context
AMRAP is an optional training format, not the HYROX® race format. The current HYROX® Singles rulebook specifies eight 1 km runs and eight stations with prescribed distances or repetitions. Athletes complete that fixed work according to the rules; they are not trying to accumulate unlimited rounds before a workout timer expires.
An AMRAP may include movements also used in HYROX®, but that choice does not make it a race simulation or establish transfer to race time. Practise the official movement standards and fixed race tasks when station-specific skill is the goal.
Questions
What is the difference between AMRAP and EMOM?
An AMRAP records as many rounds or repetitions as possible in a fixed total time. An EMOM starts prescribed work at the beginning of each minute; any remaining time in that minute may be rest.
How should I pace an AMRAP?
Choose a pace that preserves the stated movement standard and can be adjusted as the session unfolds. No universal 70–80% start or negative-split rule applies to every duration, movement and athlete.
Can an AMRAP track progress?
It can compare performance in the same test when the setup and conditions are comparable. Treat the result as one task-specific measure, not a complete or causal measure of fitness.
