A back squat is a resistance exercise with a barbell supported across the upper back. Stance, bar position, depth and load change its joint and muscle demands.

Execution

Use a rack and safety setup appropriate to the load. Place the bar securely, choose a stable stance, brace the trunk, and keep the bar balanced over the base of support while descending and standing. Foot angle, torso inclination and knee travel vary with anatomy, bar position, load and goal; forward torso inclination is not automatically an error. Use a controllable depth and progress gradually.

Evidence

A 2024 biomechanical review shows that stance, foot rotation, trunk and tibia position, and depth alter squat demands. A small 2024 study found no significant high- versus low-bar differences in lower-limb joint moments or estimated muscle forces when stance was standardized. Neither establishes one universal technique.

HYROX®

The current HYROX® rulebook includes Sled Push, Sandbag Lunges and Wall Balls, but no back squat or 1.5-times-bodyweight squat standard. Squatting may support general strength preparation; direct improvement in a station or race time is not established.

Programming

The 2026 ACSM position stand supports progressive resistance training while allowing programmes to vary with goals, experience and response. It does not prescribe one back-squat set, repetition, tempo or weekly-frequency formula for every HYROX® athlete.

Questions

Is high-bar or low-bar better for HYROX®?

Neither is an official requirement. Choose a secure, tolerable variation that fits the athlete and goal.

How deep should I squat?

Use a controlled range suited to the goal, mobility and load; one compulsory depth is not supported for everyone.

Must I squat 1.5 times bodyweight for HYROX®?

No. The current rulebook contains no back-squat test or bodyweight multiple.
