Band Pull Apart

A band pull-apart is an elastic-resistance exercise in which the hands move apart while the arms remain approximately in front of the body. Arm angle, grip, band stiffness and starting length change the resistance and muscle demand.

Execution
Choose a band that allows a controlled range. Hold it with both hands, set a comfortable arm angle, and move the hands apart without jerking or letting the band snap back. The band does not have to touch the chest. Reduce resistance or range if control is lost; stop if the movement provokes pain or neurological symptoms.
Evidence
A band pull-apart EMG study measured trapezius activation during variants in people with and without forward-head posture. EMG identifies activity during the task; it does not prove long-term strength, posture correction or injury prevention. A systematic review found that varied strengthening and stretching programmes may improve some postural measures, but it does not establish this single exercise as a cure.
HYROX®
The current HYROX® rulebook includes a Sled Pull, but band pull-aparts are not a competition movement. Similarities in upper-back involvement do not establish direct improvement in Sled Pull performance, running posture, breathing efficiency or race time.
Programming and shoulder claims
Scapular-focused programmes can help some people with defined shoulder-pain conditions, according to a systematic review, but those multi-exercise clinical results do not prove that band pull-aparts keep every shoulder healthy. Resistance, repetitions and frequency should match the goal, training load and response; daily 50–100 repetitions are not a universal evidence-based dose.
Questions
Which muscles do band pull-aparts use?
Trapezius and other shoulder or periscapular muscles can contribute; activation changes with the chosen variation.
Can they fix rounded shoulders?
Research on broader exercise programmes cannot establish one band exercise as a universal posture correction.
How often should I do them?
There is no universal daily dose. Choose volume and resistance that fit the programme and remain controlled and tolerable.
