Specifications
The official IWF 2025 rules specify a 20 kg men’s competition bar and a 15 kg women’s competition bar. Those are weightlifting-competition specifications, not a universal description of every gym bar. Check the manufacturer’s markings, compatible plates, collars and load rating before use.
Evidence
The 2026 ACSM position stand concludes that progressive resistance training improves strength and other outcomes. A meta-analysis of 13 studies found no direct free-weight versus machine advantage for strength, hypertrophy or jump performance overall; strength gains were specific to the tested modality. A barbell is therefore one effective loading tool, not an inherently superior requirement.
HYROX®
The current HYROX® rulebook lists no barbell station or barbell strength test. Barbell exercises may develop qualities useful in a programme, but the sources do not establish a 1.5-times-bodyweight squat threshold, a direct transfer to every station, or a correlation between overhead press and Wall Ball performance.
Programming and safety
Exercise choice, load, sets and weekly frequency depend on the goal, experience, recovery and available equipment. Dumbbells, machines, kettlebells, bands and bodyweight exercises can also provide progressive resistance. Dynamic weightlifting movements require suitable equipment, space and skill; no sleeve type makes a lift automatically safe.
Questions
Do I need a barbell for HYROX® training?
No. The current race has no barbell station, and progressive resistance can be delivered with several types of equipment.
Does an Olympic bar always weigh 20 kg?
Official IWF men’s and women’s competition bars weigh 20 kg and 15 kg respectively; commercial bars vary.
Which barbell exercises transfer directly to HYROX®?
No direct transfer is established here. Choose exercises for defined training qualities and practise the actual race tasks separately.
