The barbell bench press is a horizontal resistance exercise performed on a bench by lowering and pressing a barbell. Pectoralis major, anterior deltoid and triceps contribute, with technique and load changing their demands.

Execution

Use a stable bench, secure plates and a rack or spotter setup appropriate to the load. Choose a grip and range that remain controlled, keep wrists and bar secure, lower without bouncing, and rerack deliberately. Grip width, elbow path, arch and touch point vary with anatomy, goal and rules; no single angle is universally safe. Heavy breath-holding is not a default instruction for every athlete.

Evidence

A small 1RM biomechanics study found that grip width changed shoulder and elbow moments and triceps activity in trained men. A systematic review found that range of motion can affect hypertrophy, but did not establish one bench-press range for every outcome or person. These sources support adaptable technique rather than fixed universal cues.

HYROX®

The current HYROX® rulebook has no bench-press station or strength standard. Sled Push and Wall Balls differ substantially in body position and task. Bench pressing may develop general upper-body strength, but direct transfer, faster race times and a bodyweight benchmark are not established by the cited evidence.

Programming

The 2026 ACSM position stand supports progressive resistance training and shows that programme variables depend on the desired outcome. It does not prescribe one bench-press formula for HYROX®. Select load, sets, repetitions, range and frequency according to experience, goal, recovery and other race-specific work.

Questions

How much should a HYROX® athlete bench?

HYROX® has no official bench-press standard, and bodyweight benching is not a race requirement.

Is bench press necessary for HYROX®?

No. It can train general pressing strength, but the race includes no bench press.

What grip width should I use?

Grip changes joint moments and muscle activity. Use a controllable, tolerable width suited to your goal and equipment.
