Barbell Deadlift

The barbell deadlift is a resistance exercise in which a loaded bar is lifted from the floor by coordinated hip and knee extension. Stance, grip, bar type, anatomy and load alter the movement and muscular demands.

Execution
Use a stable surface, secure plates and a load you can control. Choose a stance and grip that keep the bar secure, create trunk tension, lift without a sudden uncontrolled jerk, stand to a controlled finish, and return the bar according to the equipment and setting. Back angle, hip height and bar path vary among lifters and deadlift styles. Stop or modify for pain, neurological symptoms or loss of control.
Evidence
A 2025 systematic review found that velocity decreases with intensity and fatigue while joint mechanics are more variable, and lifters can use different strategies. It does not identify one visible posture as the universally most dangerous error. Deadlifts involve multiple lower-body, trunk and grip muscles, but a simple primary/secondary hierarchy cannot capture how technique and load change demand.
HYROX®
The current HYROX® rulebook has no deadlift or deadlift-strength test. Its Sled Pull is rope-based and its Farmers Carry uses kettlebells. Deadlifting can train general strength and grip, but direct transfer to either station, nearly every station or race time is not established. No official 1.5–2-times-bodyweight target exists.
Programming and pain
The 2026 ACSM position stand supports progressive resistance training with programme variables matched to the goal. It does not prescribe one deadlift set, repetition or weekly-frequency formula. A review in chronic nonspecific low-back pain found loaded training feasible with small long-term pain differences versus unloaded exercise; this does not make deadlifting a treatment or injury-proofing method for everyone.
Questions
Conventional or sumo for HYROX®?
Neither is an official requirement, and the cited evidence does not establish one as more race-specific. Choose for anatomy, goal and tolerance.
How heavy should I deadlift?
HYROX® has no deadlift standard. Progress only within a controlled programme appropriate to experience and recovery.
Does deadlifting prevent back injury?
No such guarantee is supported. Evidence on broader programmes for chronic nonspecific pain does not prove prevention by this exercise.
