Barbell Push Press

The barbell push press is an overhead press assisted by a brief leg dip and drive.
Definition and execution
The barbell push press is an overhead press assisted by a brief leg dip and drive. The bar starts at the shoulders; knee and hip extension help accelerate it before the arms complete the press. Dip depth, stance, trunk angle and receiving position depend on the athlete, load and purpose. The reviewed evidence does not establish a universal 15 cm dip, heel-only pressure or one exact bar path for everyone.

What the evidence shows
A laboratory study in resistance-trained men tested push presses from 10% to 90% of push-press one-repetition maximum. Peak and mean power were maximised at different average loads with wide variation between participants. This supports treating the push press as a whole-body power exercise, but it does not prove that everyone can lift 20–30% more than in a strict press or that one session simultaneously improves strength and power.

HYROX® context
Current HYROX® rules define Wall Balls as a squat followed by a ball throw to a target; Sled Push requires moving a loaded sled. A push press shares leg-to-arm force production with a throw, but it is not the race movement and has no reviewed direct trial showing improved Wall Ball or Sled Push performance.

Programming
Choose load, repetitions, sets and intent according to the desired adaptation, technique and current capacity. Research expressed push-press loads as a percentage of push-press 1RM, not bodyweight. It does not justify a universal 50–70% bodyweight target, 3–4 sets of 5–8 or 3 sets of 10–12 for HYROX®.

FAQ
Push press or strict press for HYROX®?
Neither is universally superior. The push press trains coordinated leg-assisted overhead force; the strict press removes leg drive. Choose according to the intended adaptation and the rest of the programme.

What load should I use?
Use a load that permits the intended speed, range and effort with control. A bodyweight percentage is not transferable across athletes; push-press 1RM, velocity, repetitions in reserve or coaching observation are more relevant ways to individualise it.
