Barbell Shoulder Press

The barbell shoulder press is a strict overhead press performed without intentional leg drive.
Definition and execution
The barbell shoulder press is a strict overhead press performed without intentional leg drive. The bar moves from shoulder height to an overhead position and returns under control. Grip width, stance, trunk angle, range, bar path, breathing and tempo depend on anatomy, equipment, load and purpose. The reviewed evidence does not establish one mandatory shoulder-width grip, midfoot lockout, head movement or 1-0-2-0 tempo.

Muscles and variants
Small EMG studies show that shoulder-press position and implement change muscle excitation and the load that can be lifted. Deltoid, triceps, pectoral and stabilising demands vary by version; acute EMG does not prove a universal muscle hierarchy or make one variation the gold standard. Standing presses can increase some measured stabilising demands, while seated presses allow a different setup.

HYROX® context
Current HYROX® Wall Balls require a squat and throw to a division-specific target; the men’s target is 3 m and the women’s target is 2.70 m. Sled Push is a separate loaded horizontal task. A strict barbell press is neither station, and the reviewed studies do not establish direct transfer to Wall Ball or Sled Push performance.

Programming
Choose seated or standing position, load, range, sets and repetitions according to the intended adaptation, technique, capacity and programme. No reviewed source establishes 60–70% bodyweight, 3–4 sets of 5–8, a mandatory strict-press foundation before push press or thruster, or standing as universally superior for HYROX®.

FAQ
How much should a HYROX® athlete overhead press?
No HYROX®-specific bodyweight benchmark is established. Use a load that permits the intended range and effort with control and progress according to the programme and response.

Seated or standing?
They impose different stability and loading demands. Standing may increase some core and shoulder EMG measures, but that does not prove superior HYROX® performance. Choose according to goal, equipment, symptoms and technique.
