In standard HYROX Singles, Doubles and Relay, burpee broad jumps cover 80 m. Chest contact and simultaneous two-foot takeoff and landing are required, with up to 5 cm of fore-aft foot offset.

Burpee broad jumps are station 4. The rules below cover standard Singles, Doubles and Relay 2026/27. Doubles completes 80 m as a team; this is not a claim that every HYROX® format uses identical standards.

Movement standards

Start each section with both hands behind the white start line and the chest on the ground. The nipple line must make clear contact. The first movement is a burpee.

You may step or jump out of the burpee and use a knee to rise. Feet must not pass the fingertips. During the broad jump, both feet take off and land simultaneously; the fronts of the feet may differ by at most 5 cm. No extra steps or shuffles are allowed.

For subsequent burpees, place the hands no more than 30 cm ahead of the toes of the front foot. This is measured to the base of the palms at the wrists. Once placed, the hands must not move forward. You may step or jump back into the burpee.

The standard requires chest contact. It does not add a separate thigh-contact requirement or a fully upright hip-and-knee-extension checkpoint before the jump.

Distance, lanes and finish

The station totals 80 m and may contain sections and turns. Jump length is your choice. Grid lanes, where provided, are guides; you may change lanes to overtake. They do not require staying in one lane.

Both feet must fully cross each white end line before turning. You need not perform the movement around the turn, but must restart the next section in the prescribed start position. If either foot lands on the final line, another burpee broad jump is required.

Additional Doubles rules

The resting partner walks behind the working partner without obstructing others. At a change, the incoming partner places their hands where the previous partner’s feet landed, with toes and fingers in line. This changeover rule is distinct from the 30 cm placement allowance for subsequent burpees.

Penalties

The BBJ protocol gives a formal warning for the first infringement, 15 seconds for the second and another 15 seconds for each subsequent infringement. The general rule allows immediate penalties for severe violations. It does not prescribe penalty loops or a universal return-to-the-start redo for every error.

Optional practice

Practise the start position, legal hand placement, simultaneous jumps and finish-line crossing. Choose manageable practice blocks and follow the judge’s instructions. No single jump length, breathing pattern or full 80 m practice dose is prescribed here, and practice does not guarantee a race without penalties.

FAQ

Must chest and thighs both touch the floor?

The stated requirement is clear chest contact at the nipple line. The cited standard does not separately require thigh contact.

Must both feet land at exactly the same forward position?

Both feet must land simultaneously. Up to 5 cm of fore-aft difference between the fronts of the feet is permitted; more than 5 cm is not.

Is the station always one straight 80 m lane?

No. 80 m is the total distance for the standard formats covered here. The course may use sections and turns; follow the marked start and finish lines.
