Bilateral Training — Exercises that work both limbs simultaneously (squats, deadlifts, bench press). Allows heavier loads for maximum strength and power development for HYROX®.

Definition

Bilateral training uses both limbs in the same exercise or task, such as a two-leg squat or two-arm press. The limbs may not contribute equally, and bilateral does not mean that an exercise is automatically symmetrical.

Evidence and programming

A 2025 meta-analysis found no clear hypertrophy difference between unilateral and bilateral resistance training; strength gains favored the tested mode. Choose both or either from the goal, task, equipment and tolerance. Bilateral training does not guarantee balance, injury prevention or HYROX® performance.
