Glycolysis breaks glucose into pyruvate in the cell’s cytosol, producing ATP and NADH. The pathway itself does not require molecular oxygen.

What glycolysis is

Glycolysis is the sequence of reactions that converts glucose or glycogen-derived glucose units to pyruvate while producing ATP and reducing equivalents. It operates with or without abundant oxygen; subsequent pyruvate and lactate handling depends on cellular conditions and interacting pathways.

Exercise context

Energy systems overlap rather than switching at a fixed number of seconds. Faster glycolytic flux can accompany hard exercise, but blood lactate is neither a simple waste product nor a direct measure of one muscle’s glycolytic ATP. Training responses depend on the complete session and athlete, not on “isolating” glycolysis.
