The equipment

A kettlebell is a weight with a handle. Shape, construction and dimensions depend on the model. Centr’s official HYROX® Octo Kettlebell has an eight-sided cast-iron body with a coating and a chrome-plated steel handle. Therefore, “competition” does not automatically mean a hollow steel bell, and a generic competition-kettlebell chart is not a HYROX® equipment specification.

Singles weights and movement

Farmers Carry is station 6, not station 5. In Singles 2026/27, it covers 200 m using two kettlebells: 16 kg each for Women Open, 24 kg each for Men Open and Women Pro, and 32 kg each for Men Pro. Carry both bells with arms extended by your sides. You may set them down to rest, provided they do not move forward during the set-down. Follow the venue’s required laps and return the bells to the correct box with handles upright.

Doubles uses a shared carry

In Doubles 2026/27, the team shares 200 m. The working partner carries both bells; the resting partner follows behind. The weights per bell are 16 kg for Women, 24 kg for Men, Mixed and Women Pro, and 32 kg for Men Pro. Partners must not pass the bells forward during a changeover. This is not two pairs of kettlebells carried simultaneously for 200 m by each athlete.

Training and alternatives

As an optional coaching approach, choose a manageable pair and practise controlled pickup, carrying and set-down. Record load, implement, distance and rests. Dumbbells can provide a different carrying exercise, but equal kilograms alone do not establish identical race practice or training effects. ACSM’s 2026 guidance supports individualised resistance training; it does not establish that two weekly above-race-weight sessions guarantee an unbroken HYROX® carry.

FAQ

Which kettlebell weights do I need for training?

Race loads depend on division; training loads should also reflect your current capacity and the exercise. The race rulebook is not a requirement to begin with 16 or 24 kg, nor a universal shopping list for swings and presses.

Are all competition kettlebells the same?

No. Check the specific manufacturer and model. The official HYROX® Octo model uses cast iron with a steel handle. Do not assume that every product labelled competition has the same construction, dimensions or colour system.

How should I practise grip for Farmers Carry?

One optional approach is a controlled carry with a manageable load and planned rests, adapted to your current training. Neither the cited rules nor ACSM guidance validates a universal hang duration, a compulsory overload or a guaranteed improvement timetable.
