Quadriceps

The four-headed muscle group on the front of the thigh responsible for knee extension and hip flexion. The most heavily taxed muscle in HYROX® — powering Sled Push, Wall Balls, Sandbag Lunges, Burpee Broad Jumps, and all 8km of running.
Anatomy and function
The quadriceps femoris comprises rectus femoris, vastus lateralis, vastus medialis and vastus intermedius. Together they extend the knee; rectus femoris also crosses the hip and contributes to hip flexion. They act with other lower-limb and trunk muscles rather than operating alone.

Training and HYROX® context
Running, lunges, wall balls and sled work involve knee extension to different degrees, but contribution and fatigue vary with technique, load and athlete. Current HYROX® Singles includes eight 1 km runs and eight stations, with division-specific standards. Strength and endurance programming should be individualised; no fixed repetition range or split alone proves the quadriceps are the limiter, and pain needs appropriate assessment.
