A push-up is a bodyweight horizontal press performed while the hands and feet support the body. It trains the chest and triceps while the shoulders and trunk help control the movement.

A push-up is a bodyweight horizontal press performed while the hands and feet support the body. It trains the chest and triceps while the shoulders and trunk help control the movement.

Definition and muscles

In a standard floor push-up, the elbows flex as the chest moves toward the floor and extend as the body is pressed away. EMG studies in healthy young adults show substantial activity in the pectoralis major, triceps and serratus anterior; shoulder and trunk muscles also contribute. EMG describes acute electrical activity, not guaranteed strength or muscle gain.

Technique and range

Place the hands where the wrists and shoulders feel comfortable, keep the feet on a stable surface and maintain a controlled body position. Lower through a range you can control, then press back up without bouncing. Hand position, arm plane, foot position and speed change joint forces, so one hand width, elbow angle or chest-to-floor distance is not universally safest or required. Stop or modify the variation if pain occurs.

Progression and programming

An incline reduces the difficulty for many people; extra resistance or a harder leverage can increase it. Choose the variation, range, repetitions, sets and weekly frequency for the goal, current capacity and recovery, and progress when the planned work remains controlled. Evidence does not support a universal 3×20–30 prescription, a required 3–5 sessions per week or one repetition target for every athlete.

HYROX® relevance

HYROX® Singles includes Sled Push and Wall Balls, but neither station contains push-ups and each has its own technique and task demands. Push-ups can develop general upper-body pressing capacity and trunk control. No direct evidence reviewed here establishes that a particular push-up target improves either station or defines competitive HYROX® readiness; retain station-specific practice.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many push-ups should I be able to do?

There is no validated HYROX® threshold. Track repetitions performed to the same range and technique, and use the trend to select a suitable progression.

Can I train push-ups every day?

Frequency depends on volume, effort, other pressing work, symptoms and recovery. Daily practice may be tolerable at a low dose, but it is not required; reduce or space sessions when performance, technique or comfort deteriorates.
