A compound exercise used in HYROX training. One of the 104 core exercises in the Repz training database.

The rack pull is a partial-range deadlift performed from safety pins at knee height, isolating the lockout phase and allowing heavier loads than a conventional deadlift. It builds the top-end hip extension strength and grip endurance critical for HYROX sled pull and farmers carry stations.

Movement and set-up

A rack pull is a loaded hip-hinge started from supports above the floor. Starting height changes joint angles and range of motion. Set both supports evenly, secure the area and choose a height and load that permit control. Extend hips and knees to stand without treating deliberate spinal movement or bouncing from the supports as a performance target.

Programming and limits

A shorter range may allow a different load than a floor deadlift, but that does not make every heavy rack pull safe or directly equivalent. Muscle contribution and transfer vary with height, technique, load and athlete. Use gradual, individualised programming. Rack pulls are optional and do not guarantee grip, posterior-chain, deadlift, carry or HYROX® improvements.
