Russian Kettlebell Swing

The Russian kettlebell swing is an explosive hip-hinge movement that drives a kettlebell to chest height using powerful hip extension, building the posterior chain power and conditioning HYROX athletes need for sled push, sled pull, and running stations.

What an American kettlebell swing is

The American kettlebell swing is a two-handed swing that continues to an overhead finish. The kettlebell travels from the backswing between the legs to a controlled position above the head. The lower Russian-style swing usually ends around chest or shoulder height.

Technique

First learn a controlled hip hinge. Keep the spine long, move the hips back and maintain a secure two-handed grip. Drive the hips forward to create the bell's upward momentum rather than lifting it mainly with the shoulders. ACE's current swing guide describes that hip-driven pattern for a chest-height swing.

For the American variation, continue only if you can guide the bell overhead without losing your grip or control of the trunk and shoulders. CrossFit's movement resource identifies the overhead endpoint. It does not make one stance, breathing rhythm or training load universally correct.

On the descent, keep control of the bell and delay the next hinge until the bell returns toward the body. Stop the set when position or control deteriorates. Pain or uncertainty about an existing shoulder or back problem calls for individual assessment rather than a general online cue.

Programming and HYROX® context

Choose load, repetitions and rest from your experience and the purpose of the session. A load suitable for one person may be inappropriate for another; sex alone does not determine it. Learn the hinge and lower swing before adding speed, fatigue or the overhead range.

The American kettlebell swing is not one of the eight stations in the current HYROX® Singles rulebook. It may be selected as general training, but the sources cited here do not show that a particular swing prescription improves Sled Pull, SkiErg, Wall Balls or finish time. Practise the actual stations when station-specific skill is the goal.

Related options

A chest-height swing reduces the overhead range. Romanian deadlifts and cable pull-throughs train a hip-hinge pattern with different speed and loading demands. Thrusters combine a squat and an overhead action and are not mechanically equivalent to a swing.

Questions

What weight should I use?

Use a weight that lets you keep a secure grip, a controlled hinge and a stable finish for the intended set. There is no universal women's or men's HYROX® swing weight.

Is the American swing safe for every shoulder?

No exercise is universally safe. Use the overhead version only when you can control that range without pain; otherwise choose a lower swing or another exercise and seek individual advice when needed.

How does it differ from a Russian-style swing?

The clearest distinction is the endpoint: overhead for the American variation and approximately chest or shoulder height for the lower swing.
