Sandbag Lunges Muscles Worked

Sandbag lunges primarily work the quadriceps, glutes, hamstrings, core, calves, and hip flexors — a demanding unilateral exercise with an asymmetric anterior load at HYROX station 7.
Muscles and movement
A sandbag walking lunge uses hip and knee extension of the lead leg while the trunk and pelvis are controlled under an external load. Quadriceps and gluteal muscles contribute; hamstrings, calf and trunk muscles also participate. Exact contribution changes with step length, depth, speed, load position and the athlete, so a universal activation ranking is not supported.

HYROX® context
Current Singles rules place 100 m of Sandbag Lunges at station seven. The prescribed load depends on division. The rear knee must touch the floor and each repetition finishes with knees and hips extended. Practising the movement can improve task familiarity, but it does not guarantee corrected asymmetry, injury prevention or a particular race-time gain.
