Standing Barbell Calf Raise

The standing barbell calf raise is a loaded isolation exercise targeting the gastrocnemius with a barbell across the upper back, building the calf strength reserve that maintains running propulsion across all 8 HYROX race segments.
Movement and evidence
A standing barbell calf raise is loaded ankle plantar flexion performed with the knees relatively extended. In one 12-week within-person study, standing training produced more gastrocnemius and whole-calf hypertrophy than seated training, while soleus growth was similar. That result concerns muscle size in its sample, not running speed or HYROX® performance.

Execution and loading
Use stable support or appropriate equipment, keep the bar controlled and choose a range you can perform without pain. Load, repetitions and range should reflect experience, equipment and goal. Standing and seated versions are not universally interchangeable, and neither is mandatory.
